Adding a disk to a degraded NAS

Adding a disk to a degraded NAS

Hi, all

I have a readynas 102 running OS6.4 with one 4Tb disk. My NAS told me there were problems with the disk so I bought a 6Tb disk to replace it. Yes, both disks are on the list.

I shut the system down, unplugged & gave it a clean then installed the 6Tb disk.

All seemed well as it said it was resyncing. It also said it was degraded and not redundant. After 40 minutes it simply stopped resyncing and both disks went from being blue to red. The NAS is asking me to remove the useless disk.

So I guess my questions are what have I done wrong and can it be fixed?

Is there anything helpful you see in the log?

I will have to check. Damn, I knew I should've looked this morning before leaving for work.

Re: Adding a disk to a degraded NAS

Looks to me like resync is still ongoing.

Re: Adding a disk to a degraded NAS

If it were stil resyncing, wouldn't the web page show its progress? It got up to about 0.8% then the problems started. Also, why would the disk colours go from blue to red? All I see now is a message asking me to remove the disks.

If I can't get the thing running on the original disk (on its own) is there any way of retreiving the data from it? I haven't wiped the original disk but it does have these niggling faults. Even if it's just partial, I'd be happy.

What I see is that the most recent log message says "resync started" with nothing after that.

I also see "Disk: Disk Model:WDC WD4001FAEX-00MJRA0 Serial:WD-WCC130435610 was added to Channel 1 of the head unit." when you said you added a 6 TB drive.

If you don't have a backup, I think contacting support would be a good idea.

Re: Adding a disk to a degraded NAS

I pulled the disks out after the errors occurred and put the 4Tb back in. Now it's back in all I can see is a red disk. It won't do anything other than format it or change it from X-RAID. I need the data on this disk and I shouldn't have to pay support for an answer. Any help is appreciated.

Then your log snippet doesn't show anything useful - it must start after you put removed the 6 TB drive.

I understand your position, but the best option for getting your data back is to contact support.  You can make your case on payment to them.
