Backup Error - cannot create symbolic link AND more
Hi Guys,
I have a ReadyNas DUO, a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Frontview with Raidiator 4.1.8 and have never been able to trigger a backup successfully to my USB (formatted to fat32).
So I have a backup job
Job: 001
Protocol: local
Source: [media]/Pictures
Destination: [USB_HDD_1_1]/snapshots/snapshot_20_12_2011
An example of some of the errors that I see in the logs are :
Many files do copy across -but I also get a message such as :
I don't really understand why this doesn't work - and I don't understand how I can get my backup jobs to run without errors.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Richard

Reason for failure:
Error encountered copying data from source path Pictures ==> /USB_HDD_1_1/snapshots/snapshot_20_12_2011 due to unknown reason. Please see log.
I don't really understand why this doesn't work - and I don't understand how I can get my backup jobs to run without errors.

Re: Backup Error - cannot create symbolic link AND more
Try changing the backup job properties to do a Rsync backup to USB disk (be sure to enable FAT32 compatibility mode) and running the backup job again.
Your profile says you have a 2100 (a 4-bay rackmount ReadyNAS). Unless you have this as well as your Duo v1, please correct your profile to say that you have the Duo (v1).

Re: Backup Error - cannot create symbolic link AND more
Hi mdgm,
I tried your suggestion but still get a few errors such as :-
rsync: symlink "/snapshots/rsync_24_12/Pictures/iChat Icons" (in USB_HDD_1_1) -> "/Library/Application Support/Apple/iChat Icons/" failed: Operation not permitted (1)
However more worringly is the inal error message shows a large discrepancy between sent and received data.
I understand that FAT32 doesn't support symblic links. But I have a MAC, so can't write to NTFS and can't read EXT3.
Any further guidance much appreciated.
Richard
