Can not change admin password on ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus

Hello,

I am having problem with changing password for my ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus, here is what I did:

1- go to Security\Admin Password then input new admin password and retype admin password
2- Reboot NAS but unable to login with new password but I am able to login with old password.

I'm running latest firmware 4.2.27

Please help.

Did you click on "Apply" on the very bottom of the page?

Re: Can not change admin password on ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus

Try performing an OS reinstall to reset the password back to default, once you can login on the default password -change it to the new one.

Re: Can not change admin password on ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus

For example, my old password to login to RAIDiator is "12345"
to change this password I'm going to Security\Admin Password and change it to "abcdef", click on "Apply" and reboot the NAS. See picture with link below.
https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=D8EAEF2B79FEEFFC&id=d8eaef2b79feeffc%216576&v=3

When I try to login to RAIDiator after the reboot, the new password "abcdef" does not accept it but when using the old password "12345" then I can login OK.

Another funny thing is when trying to access the file sharing using "\\192.168.1.xxx\" with admin login ID and password, it only accept the new password which is "12345", is that weird?

Please help me to solve this issue.

Thanks

Have you tried the OS Re-install Nhellie suggested?

Will OS Re-Install erase all my files or my configuration?

Your data will remain intact. Some configuration will be reset e.g. your admin password and some network settings.

Re: Can not change admin password on ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus

I did OS reinstall twice (power off, press reset button until all LED lit up, release the reset, select LED 2 and press reset button again and wait until it boot up again).
According to the manual, I should be able to login with the default password (admin, admin) but I can't. I can only login with my existing password.
When I changed the admin password under "Security\Admin Password", reboot the NAS but can't login with the new password. Again, I only able to login with my existing password.

Help, help.

Re: Can not change admin password on ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus

The default admin password on the ultra 2 is "netgear1", not "admin".

The procedure for the OS reinstall is on page 13 here: http://www.readynas.com/download/docume ... pril11.pdf. The last step is "press and release" the reset button, not "press it until the system reboots". I'm not sure you did hold the button down (your previous post could be read either way) - but wanted to mention it.

Re: Can not change admin password on ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus

Yes, I did try netgear1 too but the point is I am able to login to with my old password, some how it does not reset to the default even I try to reinstall the OS twice.

Which is why I asked the press-and-release question.

The net here is that the OS reinstall procedure didn't succeed for whatever reason.

It's possible that the OS partition is full (not the data volume). That can create a bunch of weird symptoms, and eventually leads to lock-up.

Do you happen to have ssh enabled?

BTW, I recommend making (or updating) your backup w/o delay.

Re: Can not change admin password on ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus

Just had a 40 minute Teamviewer session.

It turned out that the permissions and ownership of the shadow file were incorrect. Not sure how that happened.

Consequently when the password was changed it was putting the new passwords in the wrong place where they weren't used.

After correcting this the password can now be changed correctly.
