Disk Upgrade Question

I have a ReadNAS NVX and it came with (2) 1TB drives. I wanted to replace the (2) 1TB drives with (2) 3TB drives. I followed the steps below.

1) Upgraded firmware to RAIDiator-x86 4.2.24
2) Checked hardware compatibility list and ordered supported WD Red 3TB drives
3) Removed drive 1 and replaced it with new 3TB drive.
4) Acknowledged RAID rebuild messages
5) Waited 40+ hours

I'm still waiting, and the rebuild has not yet completed. Is this normal? What should I do?

The log is below.

Tue Aug 13 20:23:16 PDT 2013 Data volume will be rebuilt with disk 1.
Tue Aug 13 20:21:09 PDT 2013 New disk detected. If multiple disks have been added, they will be processed one at a time. Please do not remove any added disk(s) during this time. [Disk 1]
Tue Aug 13 20:18:02 PDT 2013 If the failed disk is used in a RAID level 1, 5, or X-RAID volume, please note that volume is now unprotected, and an additional disk failure may render that volume dead. If this disk is a part of a RAID 10 volume, your volume is still protected if more than half of the disks alive. But another failure of disks been marked may render that volume dead. It is recommended that you replace the failed disk as soon as possible to maintain optimal protection of your volume.
Tue Aug 13 20:18:02 PDT 2013 Disk failure detected.
Tue Aug 13 20:17:46 PDT 2013 A disk was removed from the ReadyNAS.
Tue Aug 13 20:17:45 PDT 2013 Disk removal detected. [Disk 1]
Fri Aug 9 22:35:26 PDT 2013 System is up.
Fri Aug 9 22:30:08 PDT 2013 System Update Status (nas) : Your ReadyNAS device has been updated with a new firmware image. (RAIDiator-x86 4.2.24)

Re: Disk Upgrade Question

If you go to the Volumes page in Frontview what is the Volume Status?

Re: Disk Upgrade Question

Configuration: RAID Level X-RAID2, 2 disks
Status: Not redundant. A disk failure will render this volume dead.

Re: Disk Upgrade Question

And if you download your logs (Status > Logs > Download all logs) and extract the zip contents what does mdstat.log look like?

Re: Disk Upgrade Question

That indicates that md2 the device on which your data volume sits is not redundant.

I think you should open a tech support case (see Online Submission link in my sig), attach your logs zip file and ask support for advice on the next steps.

Re: Disk Upgrade Question

Did you put the replacement drive in the same slot the removed disk was in? Your mdstat.log seems to suggest that you possibly didn't.

Re: Disk Upgrade Question

Do you have a backup? You may of course have done one, but for anyone reading this thread, part of the process of vertical expansion should be to ensure that you have a backup before you start. While you are waiting for support, you could backup the data if you haven't already.
