I thought I understood DNS?
So, I read my Duo-V2 SW manual. And, I get to page 63 where Netgear shows 5 paragraphs explaining DNS. Fine. :o
I read and re-read paragraph 4. Really?
"... If you selected the option to assign an IP address manually when you configured your
Ethernet settings, you must manually specify the IP addresses of the DNS servers and the
domain name if you want to access your ReadyNAS system over the Internet. Your network
administrator can help you determine your domain name server IP address. ..."
Really?? So, If I do NOT entire my ISP DNS server addresses into my DUO machines, They are
now INVISIBLE from the "INTERNET?" Really?????
I do not operate with a 'Domain name.' My clients live on my LAN via the Windows 'Workgroup.'
I believe they communicate via assigned Win-Names/IDs, MAC addys and/or IP addys.
Well, they have happily since 1985; perhaps I forgot something.... :?
I consider the 'INTERNET' remote (and, upstairs) from my home LAN. Where have I gone wrong?
My personal Router is my physical demarcation object on my LAN.
Just a bit confused after all these years of 'ethernet' maturation............. :?

If not, you do not need to worry about that paragraph. - NASNoob11Aspirant

StephenB,
Yes, I do assign my LAN machine's IP addresses directly. I do NOT use DHCP locally on my home LAN. My only connection with DHCP is between my ISP and my router/gateway. My ISP do not offer static IP Assignment.
I accept that you know what you asked, but, I remain confused. Can you elaborate?
I do accept that should I wish my NAS to communicate external of my LAN, I need to tell the NAS some DNS server(s) to use. ATM I use my ISP's DNS servers. And, I suppose I do this so the NAS' can phone home to Netgear for checking clocktime (NTP). I do not run a time server on my LAN's server. Actually, my server has been off for months! LOL!
What still confuses me is that v5.3.3 f/w in the V2 NAS simply will not allow me to tell it the IP Address of my gateway (router). It continues to show 'default gateway' and is greyed out(?) Most odd....... :? My DUO-V1's f/w gets really grumpy if I forget to tell it the IP Address of my gateway (router). Still learning this new V2 f/w.... :wink: NASNoob wrote: "... Allow me to try to clarify the paragraph;
If you selected the option to assign an IP address manually when you configured your
Ethernet settings, you must manually specify the IP addresses of the DNS servers.
If you want to access your ReadyNAS system over the Internet via DNS NAME (ie http://www.whateveryourdomainnameis.com), you must manually specify the domain name, in addition to having your dns name point to your internet connection's IP.
If you do not have a domain name, then simply leave it blank.
If you want to access your readynas over the internet without a domain name, you can do so directly via the external ip of your internet connection and with the applicable port forwards from your firewall/router.- NASNoob11AspirantTechnoJnky,
Thanks for your clarification. Your words reiterate my past DNS reads and training. At this point, I plan to just forget the Netgear DNS printed explanation. I do fully get the Netgear perspective via the 'Internet.' I just do not use my NAS' as fully-connected Netizens. I do get it now!
