Moved to ultra 4 plus - can't access shares from laptop

So I have an older NV+ that I set up a few years ago. Even though the workgroup I use at home "HOME" is different from the domain my laptop (work based) is set up with "WORK", I was still always able to access my shares on the readynas by simply going to the nas "\\homenas", and then accessing a share and putting in a name and password of a user.

Worked without a hitch, was great.

I just switched over to the readynas ultra+ and since then, this no longer works. Instead when I try to access the readynas, it shows me the shares, but when I click on one, it asks for a user name and password (so far so good), but when I put in a user name and password that works for the readynas (and works with every other internal machine I access with) I get an error that \\homenas\share is not accessible and i might not have permission to the network.

I tried going with "HOME\user" to switch the domain to the workgroup, but that doesn't seem to work either.

Any thoughts on fixing this problem? Everything worked just fine with the older machine, so it isn't that I must have to set the domains to be the same name (and I can't since I am locked out of the work machine to make those types of changes).

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Permissions can be tricky, you may want to open a support case. If the Ultra was purchased in the last 90 days you are entitled to free phone support in that time frame. Otherwise you will need to make sure the user name and password are correct within the ReadyNAS. You may also want to check the permissions on the shares and make sure that user has access. You can also reset the permissions by using the "Advanced" tab in the permission section in the share listing section.

Re: Moved to ultra 4 plus - can't access shares from laptop

I have now figured it out, and been completely surprised by it since nobody made me aware of this until I spoke with technical support.

Namely in my NV+, I can set the security mode between three modes: user, domain and/or share based security. On the NV+ I have user based security, which then allows me access from other machines.

HOWEVER, on my new readynas ultra 4 plus which was supposed to replace my older NV+ here at home, IT DOES NOT ALLOW ME TO SWITCH TO USER security mode.

Any thoughts on this? I see this as a super important option for my home network since I have to access shares from multiple domains.

Thoughts?

That is because only User security mode is supported on the Ultra series

AD support is available on Pro models and Share mode has been discontinued

Re: Moved to ultra 4 plus - can't access shares from laptop

Actually, now I am back to being confused. I just realized my NV+ is set to user security mode, so even though I can't change it on the Readynas Ultra 4 plus, that can't be the issue then.

I am dying because I have been calling user support since I am still within the 90 day support window, but I am really getting no where.

I have my NV+ side by side my readynas ultra 4 plus, and I have been checking their setup side by side, and see NO difference.

Incidentally, one day out of the blue, I all of a sudden was able to access the ultra 4 from my work machine. That worked for a day, then stopped again. So even MORE bizzare now. Something is really not right and not getting any help ascertaining what.

Make sure you're logging in with a user account that exists on the NAS. Does accessing the share using the admin account work?
