In my ReadyNAS NV+ v2 running Raidiator 4.1.14, there were 4x Seagate ST31500341AS 1397 GB drives. One failed. On the hardware compatibility list, I see that there's a 3GB Seagate and the NAS should happily use it (although only the first 1.5GB for now).
Great—I ordered a ST3000DM001-1ER166, and added it. Every time I add the drive, the NAS logs show:
- The disk attached to channel 3 could not be used. The most common reasons are RAID resync in progress, faulty drives, and disks that are too small to be added to the array.
- The disk on channel 3 has failed. The NAS will automatically shutdown in 30 minutes to prevent possible data loss resulting from additional failed drives.
I enabled SSH and looked for more interesting logs but nothing stood out.
Ideas?
Thanks,
Joshua

Your mistake is right here. You have an NV+ v1 (v2 platforms all run 5.x.x firmware). The v1 is limited to 2 TB drives, because there is no GPT support.
You are not alone in being confused on this, lots of people before you have made the same error. The labels are confusing - read through this info if you want more information: http://www.rnasguide.com/2012/01/09/how-to-tell-whether-i-have-a-duo-v1-or-duo-v2-or-nv-v1-or-nv-v2/

I no longer recommend desktop drives in any NAS (whether they are on the HCL or not). Both Seagate and Western Digital have NAS-purposed products (Seagate VN drives, WDC Red and Red Pro). They are much better choices.
Lots of NAS owners (not just ReadyNAS) have had issues specifically with the Seagate DM drives.

Re: New drive is marked "Dead"
WDC WD20EFRX-68EUZN0 initialized and synced over about 17 hours.
The R can now be returned to my AID.
Thanks again,
Joshua
