What about accessibility direct from the internet when you are hacked or access your files from somewhere else?

If you are uploading files from a public PC w/o protection, then the scan wouldn't happen until you accessed the the files from one of your protected windows systems.  Since the NAS is running linux, there isn't much risk of damage spreading to other files unless it is being accessed by an OSX or Windows PC).

If a hacker attempts to penetrate the NAS, the AV scanner honestly won't help.

Re: OS 6.4.1 slow ... to the point of unusable

Can I downgrade from 6.4.2-T59 to 6.4.0 without issues?

If so, what is the correct downgrade procedure?

(Already downloaded ReadyNASOS-6.4.0-x86_64.img on my PC)

Just use the manual installation control on the admin web ui (system->services).

He said he'd already downloaded it, so I didn't bother to include the link.

Read the thread, it answers your question.

-download 6.4.0 from the link above

-extract the img file from the zip

-use the web admin ui's "manual install" control on the system->settings page.

But disable the AntiVirus service first, as that will likely be enough to solve your problem.

We have a fix that we would like some user feedback on. If you are interested please disable anti-virus under System > Settings > Service, Update your unit to 6.4.1 and send me a PM.

Re: OS 6.4.1 slow ... to the point of unusable

I also had my RN102 that slow to the point of unusable. I went back to 6.4.0 because I can't afford to have the RN off-line or soo slow that it is not usable. Hopfully the next FW-Update will be better. Wenn I read that the antivirus workaround is a go, maybe I will try again...

Just for others with the same problem:

Logon to the admin-page

Unpack the 6.4.0 zip and upload it in settings to the RN

Going back to 6.4.0 is easy!

Re: OS 6.4.1 slow ... to the point of unusable

I disabled 6.4.1's Antivirus and that worked for me; will keep an eye on this forum to know when the fix from NetGear is ready.  Thank you to Stephen for all the clear, helpful info you have posted on this subject as well as the positive attitude!

Re: OS 6.4.1 slow ... to the point of unusable

Having the same slowdown issue on my 3130 with 6.4.1.... Turned off the antivirus service and the system came right back to life.

Will wait for the next firmware update instead of downgrading to 6.4.0.

Thanks for the troubleshooting help!

We are aware of the issues with Antivirus slowing down the NAS. We've been looking into what we can do to resolve this.

Hi,

Thanks for taking time to support us.

May I update, that I have my antivirus disabled already, however backing up folder from My PC to Ready Nas has only reached to 567 GB out of the 1.32 TB of Data for more than 24 hours.

My PC is on hooked up on to Giga switch and so is my Ready Nas.

Could you please advise if Im doing anything wrong here?

Also the downgrade option tempeted me, however that fact that I spent so long in transfer and by the way which is still going on will be broken if I try downgrading.

Your help in this reagrds is greatly appreciated as always.

Peace

I heard / read 6.4.2 is available. Is This correct and is it safe?

It is released, and I've installed on my RN102 and my RN202.  No problems so far.

BTW, I did a factory reset on the RN102, and that restored its original performance (in fact write speeds are quite a bit faster than I measured back in the 6.2.x days).  I'm seeing 70-75 MB/s on the RN102 (both read and write), and ~100 MB/sec on the RN202.

Both are jbod, not RAID-1.

A factory reset destroy data? I am not able to look it up in the manual, sorry for responding so pure.

Yes.  A factory default wipes all data.

There is some down time.

Restoring the data with rsync took 1 TB per day.  I think if you used NFS or CIFS it would have been > 4 TB per day.

6.4.2 update NOT RECOMMENDED for RN104 - AV issue still exists on mine even after reboot.

Re: OS 6.4.1 slow ... to the point of unusable

Hi amtrakuk1,

There are bugs and issues that were addressed by the Official 6.4.2 Firmware. We highly suggest that we keep are units up to date. With regard to the AV issue, we don't have a fix available at the moment.

Kind regards,

Re: OS 6.4.1 slow ... to the point of unusable

Not looking good on the RN 516 either.   Installed 6.4.2 update and turned virus checker on again - SLOW again... real SLOW, like the subject says to the point of unusable.   Turned off virus checker and all well again.

Please resolve.

Re: OS 6.4.1 slow ... to the point of unusable

Hi Skepher,

The Official 6.4.2 Firmware did not address the AV issue (check the release notes here). A fix will be available soon.

Re: OS 6.4.1 slow ... to the point of unusable

Well that's no fun.  I guess I incorrectly assumed the issue was resolved in 6.4.2.

For anyone else, read the notes (like I didn't).

6.4.2 does NOT fix the virus checker slow issue.

Re: OS 6.4.1 slow ... to the point of unusable

Hi all!

That’s the answer I was looking for. I'm a bit disappointed because I thought this major bug will be fixed with the 6.4.2. So this version is also useless... Can't believe this is treated like a minor concern... So still running 6.4.0 until the next round.

Br,

Florian
