Performance pointers + cable

Hi,

I'm getting 30MB/s +/- 10% write speed to my new ReadyNAS 104 RAID5.
From what I see here - that seems Ok, but thought I'd see if I can optimise stuff.

(RAID5, 4xWD 3TB Red disks, Unmanaged gigabit switch, 5m Cat6 cable to NAS, 40cm Cat5e to PC, Win7, Drag+drop to share)

Performance
Is 30MB/s what I should be expecting for the above setup ?

Performance tips
Any tips ? E.g. I don't know what Jumbo Frames is.
Is there a resource for general Performance tips ?
The page linked to here often is giving a Not Found 404 error : http://www.readynas.com/?p=310

Cables
Is it worth getting a Cat6 cable for PC->switch ?
Will that make much of a difference ?

TIA

Re: Performance pointers + cable

Cat 5e is fine for gigabit, esp. since you are only talking 40 cm.

Can you try this tool and report back on its performance? http://www.808.dk/?code-csharp-nas-performance
You'll need to map a share to a drive letter to use it.

Also, what switch do you have?

SmallNetbuilder.com tested the RN104 at ~85 MB/sec read and ~40 MB/sec write. http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas- ... l=&start=1

To give a indication:
Overhere a RN104 on 6.1.4 with 4 X ST2000M001 in raid 5
Test done from Dell XPS I5 notebook. 10m cat5/E, TP-Link TL-SG108, 3m cat5/E, TP-link TL-SG108, 1m cat5/e, Readynas RN104

Re: Performance pointers + cable

Ok. This is quite a bit better than ~30 MB/s

Does the Dell laptop have an SSD drive?

Re: Performance pointers + cable

No it has a 2.5 inch 750GB 7200rpm from WD
It does 99MB/s read and 98MB/s write tested with Crystal diskmark

Re: Performance pointers + cable

LAN test lite from totusoft gives similar results.

Re: Performance pointers + cable

ok. Your speeds are slightly slower than what smallnetbuilder got, but they are testing with a desktop platform that is faster than the laptop.

Personally I would leave it at that - though if you want to try enabling jumbo frames, that would be a next step.
