Personal Web Server - Static IP?
Hi there
Been through the 'create a personal webserver' http://www.readynas.com/?p=135
All good and running on the LAN, but when I try and access via http:<myipaddress> I get the following message in firefox: The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. Tried accessing from another local machine, different browsers and OS - same problem.
Is this coming from my ISP? Been round and round lots of trial and error configs with the NAS and Router.
Any ideas?
Many thanks
Mick

Re: Personal Web Server - Static IP?
To get this to work you need to set up your router to forward the http port (80 is standard), and use the external IP address your ISP assigns (which you can see on the router). Is that what you have done?

Re: Personal Web Server - Static IP?
Hi Stephen, many thanks.
Yes, using a Belkin router with port 80 forwarding set to the ReadyNas 1100 IP address.
In the router config - the ISP IP is set to automatic as I don't think a static option is available for my broadband service plan. Subsequently, each time I boot the router, I get a new internet IP address. That accepted for the time being, when I use that current IP from http://whatismyip.org I get the connection reset message.
Access is fine from all LAN machines - OSX, Windows, and Ubuntu.
I guess this is a router issue or is my ISP clobbering the connection?
Cheers
Mick

Re: Personal Web Server - Static IP?
Yes, when accessing over the internet you need to use your ISP IP address. Your home network IP addresses are all private, and cannot be accessed remotely.

However, that is not enough. You also need to tell your router to forward port 80 traffic from your ISP to your NAS.
Since your ISP IP address will change (without notice) it is best to also sign up for a dynamic DNS service (there are some free ones), so you can access the web page by a URL and not by IP address. However, I suggest you do that after everything else is working.
