Plz recommend long-lived 2TB HDD
My NV+ has been throwing a series of gradually increasing reallocated sector counts for going on two months, so I plan to buy a replacement HDD to have on stand-by for when the other shoe drops. The fact that I'm running, not just an NV+, but also an NV, is a clue that I'm keen on my hardware lasting a long time, so I'd like to hear views on which are the longest-lived 2TB HDDs. The 1TB Hitachis in my NV are beyond 50,000 hours power-on time, still going strong, which I consider outstanding. Performance is a second-tier concern, and I would prefer to stay away from WD (too many warranty disputes with them).
This is slightly OT but, since you're already here, I seem to recall some time back that 2TB would forever be the max size for an NV+ (v.1) HDD. Yes? And what about the NV? It also will accept 2TB HDDs, provided the firmware is recent enough, will it not?

Re: Plz recommend long-lived 2TB HDD
Hi,
Are you aware of the various issues regarding expansion to the 2TB capacity if your NAS is an older one? Be sure to read this topic: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=75153, as well as this: http://www.rnasguide.com/2011/06/22/why-you-might-want-to-factory-reset-a-sparc-readynas/ Also, see the HCL at http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20641. Lastly, there's this: http://note-to-self.baker.com/2012/12/21/netgear-readynas-nv-v1-vs-nv-v2-and-2tb-vs-3tb-hdd/
Note that the author of the last article recommends the WD RED 2TB HDDs for the NV+ (v1), but it NOT on the HCL.

Re: Plz recommend long-lived 2TB HDD
Thanks for that, seezee. Yes, I am aware, but I'm about to post in the installations and upgrades forum for clarification on that point.
And as a continuation to my earlier post (something I forgot to ask), IIRC from the last time I did this, if I'm adding a blank HDD to an array, it should be cold-plugged, but a used disk should be hot-plugged.
For instance, the HDDs in my NV+ are larger than those in my NV, so I plan to hand them down from the NV+ to the NV as they are replaced. If memory serves, when I put the new 2TB HDD in the NV+, it should be cold-plugged, but when I migrate the 1.5TB drives to the NV, because they already have been written to, they should be hot-plugged. Am I close?

Should wait for 1 of the Jedi to chime in on this as I don't know the answer.

Re: Plz recommend long-lived 2TB HDD
The only reason not to hot add a disk is if you are trying to preserve data on the disk, or if you are about to boot into factory.
If you are adding a new disk it's always better to hot add it, whether as an additional disk or replacing a smaller or broken disk,
If you are planning to move all the 1.5 tb disks to the nv at once then you'd want to remove them from the nv+ Off, and add them in the same order to the nv while off.
You won't be able to move one at a time and preserve data on them.

Re: Plz recommend long-lived 2TB HDD
Backblaze has some good blog posts regarding this.
http://blog.backblaze.com/2014/01/21/what-hard-drive-should-i-buy/
Personally I'd stay away from Seagate. I had 2 1TB Barracuda's die within 2 days of each other. Lost 1 disk on a Friday, went out to buy a replacement for it on Saturday, got home and another had died. Go figure.. first one had over 100 reallocated sector counts, the other hand less than 10. Lost everything. A dd-rescue didn't work.
