RN214 with OS 6.5: spin down problem with disks

Dear community,

since some day I am the owner of a RN214. I updated the firmware to 6.5 as recommended. I tried to activate the automatic spin down functionallity for my two installed WD Red disks (3TB). I tried already 5 minutes and 20 minutes. Then the display of the NAS shows that the disks spin down now and in the same moment/1 second later the disks start again. This also appears when there is no network connection for the NAS so that it cannot be another computer that starts the disks again by means of an access to the NAS. Of course I already restartet the NAS, but the problem is still the same. Who can help me?

Kind regards

Sebastian

Which Services are you running under System > Settings > Services.

Also do you use any of the Cloud services?

Which apps do you have installed?

Hi vollprofi1,

Prior the update, was the feature working fine? Also, tell us the exact model of these WD drives you have in your system.

Looking forward to your response.

Kind regards,

Re: RN214 with OS 6.5: spin down problem with disks

Hi,

there is no  service, no App etc. installed. I use this type of disks: WD30EFRX. I do not know if there was a difference when using the system witz another firmware because I did the update directly on first startup of the system. Is there a possibilty to see what signal is responsable for the direct spin up of the drive, e.g. something like a log?

Re: RN214 with OS 6.5: spin down problem with disks

You must be using some services. If the NAS was doing nothing at all then the disks wouldn't be spinning for all the time you had them set to be spun down. Did you check in the areas I suggested to see what you are running?

Can you send in your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig).

Re: RN214 with OS 6.5: spin down problem with disks

I will sent you the logs when I am am home again (at the moment at work).

It was a misunderstanding. Now I understand what you ment with services:

SMB, AFP, ReadyDLNA, UPnP, HTTP, HTTPS and SSH

One additional question: When I want to do some tests of course they need very much time when I always have to wait until the time is over so that the NAS spins down the disks. Is there a command to corce the spin down so that I can check if it spins up again directly without waiting the minimum time of 5 minutes?

Re: RN214 with OS 6.5: spin down problem with disks

Your ReadyNAS was doing a resync of the volume at 10:28 AM on the 19th, then finished at 3:15 AM 5/20... and you only had Spindown enabled for 12 seconds.

[16/05/19 10:28:40 PDT] notice:volume:LOGMSG_RESILVERSTARTED_VOLUME Resyncing started for Volume data.
[16/05/19 19:31:01 CEST] info:system:LOGMSG_SPINDOWN_ENABLE Automatic disk spin-down enabled.
[16/05/19 19:31:13 CEST] info:system:LOGMSG_SPINDOWN_DISABLE Automatic disk spin-down disabled.
[16/05/20 03:15:42 CEST] notice:volume:LOGMSG_RESILVERCOMPLETE_VOLUME Volume data is resynced.

After that, it spent most of the morning spinning up and spinning down. Spin ups ranged anywhere between 7 seconds and as long as 7 minutes.

Can you try turning off your IPv6 and seeing if that makes a difference?  I wonder if your IPv6 is causing it to spin up. I noticed this once upon a time.

Can you also try turning off UPnP?

Re: RN214 with OS 6.5: spin down problem with disks

Hi,

I checked it with UPNP. No difference. Now I check the difference if shutting off IPv6. I will come back to you then. But I already checked running the NAS without attached network cable and it was the same effect. So I cannot believe that it is a problem of IPv6. Next thing I will try is to shut off the intelli park functionmallity of the WD Red hard drives. Do you know if this could cause the conflict that disks do not spin down because the drive shows activity after 5 minutes to park the heads?

Re: RN214 with OS 6.5: spin down problem with disks

I testet it now:

1. Shutting down UPNP: no effect

2. Shutting off Pv6: no effect

3. Shutting off intelli park functionallity of WD Red disks: no effect

Additional information: to make sure that no network access (although I did nothing with the NAS after only setting it up) causes the spindown problem I took off the network cable from the NAS, but I still can notice by the flashing activity LED and also by the noise of the disks that there is some access on the disks. There seems to be a big problem in the firmware that causes access to the harddrive without any requirement. What coulkd that do and how can that be fixed? Or could it be a problem of MY RN214 so that I have to send it to you to get a new an (guarantee is available). Since more than three days I sit here to solve this problem and could not try anything else with this device due to malfunction of basic functionallity of this device. Slowly but surely I am very unsatisfied with respectivelly disappointed about this device!

Problem is still existing!

What is to do next?

Re: RN214 with OS 6.5: spin down problem with disks

The topic is still open. After activation some kind of log functionallity by netgear support the spin down does not run anymore. Before that disks spinned down and up, but now even the spin down does not run. Any idea?

Re: RN214 with OS 6.5: spin down problem with disks

RN316 OS 6.5.0

Same problem. Having downloaded logs due to another problem I noticed immediate spin-ups.

This, below, is a days log, I chose it as there was no significant load that day, but it is representative of each day in the log. There is no 'after' time > 17 seconds. I have no 'apps' installed, IPv6 is off, Cloud apps are all off, I am the only user, only SMB/HTTP/HTTPS services enabled. Spin down is set to 90m. I note in the logs there is an hourly cron job, presumably logs are to a memory partition?

Re: RN214 with OS 6.5: spin down problem with disks

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with a ReadyNAS 104

I have no apps or extras installed, and today ensured that there were no network devices running apart from the router.

The logs show that this started immediately after the 6.5.1 update, and it's maybe worth noting that there is an explicit 'Enabling spindown for disk 1->3' but not disk 4?

Mon Aug 1 2016 20:59:51 System: Firmware was upgraded to 6.5.1.

Tonight I've tried running the NAS disconnected from the network with a 10min spindown timer and see slightly different behaviour...

I'm not entirely sure what conclusion to draw from this, as I had hoped it would either resolve the issue completely, or at worst exhibit identical behaviour. Anyone else see the same thing?

I guess the next steps are to disable the SMB / FTP / HTTP(s) services one at a time to see if any of those are responsible. Is there any kind of guide to turning the HTTPS service back on after disabling it through the GUI? Is disabling the SMB service 'safe' in terms of data loss?

Does anyknow know if it is possible to downgrade the firmware from 6.5.2 --> 6.4.2?

Re: RN214 with OS 6.5: spin down problem with disks

Odin, just to let you know, I gave up holding my breath for support, turned off spin-down to save wear and tear.

Re: RN214 with OS 6.5: spin down problem with disks

That's really disheartening to hear. It's an expensive peice of kit and I'm keen to get it working properly again.

I found their technical support number so will try and give them a call and see what happens. It's pretty late in the UK at the moment, so this may have to wait until tomorrow.

I'll keep this post updated with any progress.

Re: RN214 with OS 6.5: spin down problem with disks

So...

The support number turns out to be GearHeads, who will charge £106 ($139) if they manage to fix the issue. It's an odd support contract that will cover any kind of technical assistance with any of my other devices - smart tv's, apples etc for the duration of a year.

Problem is I'm a techy by trade anyway and can't imagine I'll need to call them for anything else.

The question then becomes is fixing spindown worth spending £100+ on? It almost makes more sense to buy a new one on amazon for £154 instead and gamble on an earlier firmware. At least I'd have spares.

I've been happy with it until now, but the idea of any problem after 90days costing £100 just to talk to someone is frankly galling when it might have cost in excess of £1,000 to buy.

Does Netgear ever visit the forums? I'd also like know if I can safely downgrade from 6.5.1 to 6.4.1 and it would be nice to know that without having to spend money first.

Yes, we do visit the forums. No, you cannot safely downgrade from 6.5 to 6.4 due to changes between the major releases.

GearHead is more of support for your whole computer + NETGEAR products, not specifically more-dedicated support experts in one product, like you'd get if you used mynetgear.com to create a case for your issue.

Re: RN214 with OS 6.5: spin down problem with disks

Many thanks for taking the time to reply.

Sadly my device is outside of the 90 day warranty and the only options I can seem to find are either to purchase a service contact, or to 'Ask the Community' Is this correct?

Re: RN214 with OS 6.5: spin down problem with disks

These are the options it gives me:

"

Based on your serial number and purchase date, NETGEAR can offer you the following support options:
Complimentary
Ask our community
Search our knowledge base
Live chat is unavailable at the moment

"

I have not seen live chat available. So

a. 'ask the community' and don't get an answer.

b. answer the web survey saying I would not recommend this due to poor support.

c. Repeat...
