RN314 missing volume after disk mysterious disk removal

Hello, We have issues with an RN314 loaded with 4x 2TB drives that we support. All shared folders were not accessible from March 2. Logging into the RN314 and looking at Logs page it was apparent that a Disk was removed from Channel 1 on March 1st and volume data health was changed from Redundant to Degraded. This disk was never physicly removed.

After a couple of reboots the disk shows up as being connected but in the volume window it says ‘Remove inactive volumes to use disk. Disk #1,2,3,4’

Can anyone help recover the volume and data?

I have downloaded NAS logs and can post if needed. Thanks in advance - Nick

I think the best path is to PM a link to one of the mods (perhaps @JohnCM_S or @Marc_V ) and ask them to analyze. Don't post the logs publicly.  BTW, if the NAS was purchased between 1 June 2014 and 31 May 2016, then you are entitled to lifetime chat support.  If that's the case, then you might want to start with that.

If the NAS was still in use when the volume was degraded, then it might have ended up out-of-sync when you got it back up.  One option is to power down, and reboot with the channel 1 disk removed, and see if the volume is mounted. Use the "read only" boot menu option for this - pages 74-75 here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/READYNAS-100/ReadyNAS_%20OS6_Desktop_HM_EN.pdf  You don't want to allow writes to the data volume until you get this sorted out.

If this works, then offload any data you don't have backed up before you go any further.  If it fails, then power down and reinsert the removed disk.

This raises the possibility that there is something wrong with the NAS chassis.  If the NAS is still covered under warranty, you might want to contact paid support.

Paid support is also a good path for getting the volume mounted, though that might require paying for data recovery.  If you have a backup, then rebuilding the volume and restoring it from backup is less expensive, and likely faster.

Re: RN314 missing volume after disk mysterious disk removal

It sounds to me that the problem is that Drive 1 is out of sync with the rest of the NAS.  One drive out of sync doesn't typically cause an issue, but it can if it's drive 1, since the NAS typically boots off that drive.  I suggest removing Drive 1 with the power off and power up again.

If it then boots, I would be hesitent to add Drive 1 back into the NAS without first checking it out with vendor tools.  There is a reason the NAS thought it was removed.

I agree with @Sandshark here. Try to remove the bad disk and then boot up with just the 3 remaining disks. It very much sounds like a faulty disk issue.
