ReadyNAS 214 Not Booting
This morning I need to unplug my ReadyNAS 214 via the mains plug socket. Before doing so I powered it off using the power button on the unit. I unplugged it from the mains, added the plug to an adapter and turned the ReadyNAS back on.
However for the first time ever it will now not boot properly. It gets stuck for a long time then I have to resort to unplugging the back of the unit and plugged it back in. It stops at different percentages 88%,93% once 99%.
I've just tried again, come to work and left it for a few hours. I can't login remotely so I can only imagine that something is wrong. When I tried using Raidar at home it showed the unit and that it was being booted up.
What do I need to do/can try. All the media on the unit is not backed up. I've got three 6tb drives in the unit all backing each other up but if I have to do a factory reset I imagine it will wipe all these disks so I would like to avoid this if possible.
Please help and thanks in advance.

Re: ReadyNAS 214 Not Booting
Hi Bigmaca,
Can you download the NAS system logs through RAIDar?
You may also try booting the NAS to Read-only mode and see if you can access the data.

Re: ReadyNAS 214 Not Booting
Hi JohnCM_S,
Thanks for your help with this.
I can't I don't think as it says the unit is booting and nothing more. How could I grab the logs through Raidair?
Can I run it in safe mode by using the reset button on the back?
Would reinstalling the OS help with anything? And would it delete anything as well?

Re: ReadyNAS 214 Not Booting
Hi Bigmaca,
You will not be able to run the NAS in safe mode using the reset button. Safe mode will appear when the NAS encounters the situations listed in this article.
OS re-install should not delete any data on your NAS but I don't think that it will be much of help on this situation. Perhaps try first booting the NAS to read-only mode and see if you can access the data on that mode.

Re: ReadyNAS 214 Not Booting
Hi JohnCM_S,
When I'm home I'll give this ago straight away. If I am able to see the volumes in safe mode, but from memory it will not give me that function as everything seems to be working normally and it isn't displaying an error.
I think this has happened before and then after multiple attempts it came back on. I won't bother with the OS reinstall

Re: ReadyNAS 214 Not Booting
Hi JohnCM_S.
I've been trying all evening to sort this but had no joy. There is no way for me to get the logs on Raidar or on admin page as I can't get onto either as it says that the unit is booting.
In Raidar is shows all volumes with a tick so I guess they are in working order. If it's any help the unit gets to an xagent.service which takes ahwile to boot and then gets stuck on upnphttpd.service at 99%. Is there anyway around this, I'm now petrified I'll lose data. I can't boot the unit into safe mode either. If I take out the disks it will but there are no logs to take.
Thanks for your help with this, I really hope we can sort it. I've left it unplugged over night so fingers crossed

That isn't possible. The system will automatically boot in safe mode in some circumstances. But there is no manual way to do that.
What you could attempt to do is boot the system in read-only mode (not the same as safe mode). Is that what you tried?
If read-only mode doesn't boot, then I suggest contacting paid support for this.

The only way to avoid data loss is to have backups. RAID isn't enough.
That said, I think the odds of paid support getting your NAS to boot w/o data loss are good. After that you should put a backup plan in place for your data.

Re: ReadyNAS 214 Not Booting
Hi Bigmaca,
Just in case that you need it, here is the link for the steps on how to boot the NAS to read-only mode. If you cannot still access your data on that mode, it will be best for you to try the NETGEAR paid support as what @StephenB has mentioned.

Re: ReadyNAS 214 Not Booting
Hi StephnB,
Thanks for getting in touch.
You're completely right. After viewing the safe mode protocols my ReadyNas was not encountering any of the criteria that would merit safe mode to be booted.
In regards to my data, yes I've been a fool and a bit naive. Moving forwards I'm going to look at getting an external hard drive to put the data onto. I ended up paying for the technical support this morning and they have just resolved the issue. If you're interested it was apparently because of 'chunk stream files that were on the root directory' these had been put there by a service I use called Plex.
Thanks again for your help

Re: ReadyNAS 214 Not Booting
Hi JohnCM_S
I tried the read only mode this morning as well as testing of the disks. I did end up paying for the paid support this morning and it's worked. As mentioned to @StephenB . It transpires that it was due to 'chunk stream files on the root directory' which were put there by Plex.
Thank you again for your help. Hopefully my experience will help in the fault finding for other individuals.

They are created as part of real-time transcoding. Ideally you'd be able to specify where they should be put. It might be worth following up in the plex forum, requesting that they put them in /apps (where the rest of the plex stuff is stored).
