ReadyNAS Duo V2 - USB 3.0 Devices Only Work @ USB 2.0 Speeds

I've read through the forums and I understand this device was just released last month but having big problems/reservations with this unit. There basically is no HCL for USB storage on the Duo V2. All I can find is a link that takes me to a forum of people posting issues. Nothing relevant in the Performance board either. I'm using Seagate 2TB Expansion USB3.0 drives. I have 4 & hoped to connect to this via a powered USB 3.0 hub. All the drives are powered. I removed the hub from the equation to make sure it couldn't be the culprit. I get horrible USB 2.0 speeds between a 5400rpm SATA 500gb Seagate I have in the Duo V2 and the Expansion 2TB 3.0 - basically 24-26 MB/s. That's in both directions via cp command through ssh and using Win explorer on other systems. Those are the same results I get when connecting the USB3.0 drives to USB2.0 ports on other systems (Ubuntu on Intel NAS and Win7 X64 Pro). I do not believe USB3.0 is enabled or there is a hardware conflict not showing up in any system logs on the Duo V2.
On transfers of the same test files (varying sizes from 250mb to 4gb) from my existing NAS over gigabit ethernet I get 60MB/s to internal Duo V2 drive(older Seagate) and USB2.0 speeds to the 2TB Expansion drive (via win explorer shares.) I get between 65-85MB/s copying the same files from the existing NAS to a Win7 x64 Core2Duo system over the same network with other traffic present. There is no Performance tab in the V2 web mgmt interface. I would go to the RND2000-200NAS support page but there isn't one. I have the hardware and software manuals and there is nothing about USB 3.0 performance in those.

Is anyone getting real USB 3.0 speeds from the rear ports on the V2? Is there a firmware update looming for this like with other units?

  • Ok so I dove into the kernel log and have figured out the problem. The kernel in use in 5.3.2 is pretty antiquated -2.6.31.8. It's likely missing many of the USB 3.0 patches put out since the current stable is 3.1.5. Not sure if you guys have been applying patches for certain drivers or not. You can see here in the changelog for 2.6.32.13, Sarah - the woman in charge of USB support referencing the improperly set context field bug which may apply to this situation looking at the error in my log. There are also some issues with certain hardware not generating MSI interrupts which was patched on all stable kernels back to 2.6.36. A quick search on Google shows that most folks with these problems experience intermittent connectivity and slow read/write speeds. These are the same symptoms I've been having with my USB3.0 hub - a Syba SDHUB20058, an external SATA->USB 2.0 dock and the Seagate drives. I hope you guys will investigate or at least bring your the kernel current or more current so that some of these patches for USB 3.0 support can be included. Not sure what types of size constraints you guys have since I know you're dealing with a limited amount of space. If you are unable or unwilling to address this could you possibly point me to your build tools for the Duo V2 firmware so that I can compile my own kernel and attempt to resolve this? All I really want is USB 3.0 support. 120MB/s and I won't give a damn if anyone ports over whatever addons.

    NetGear does backport patches where it can and does tend to gradually update the kernel over time picking kernels that have proven to be good ones.

    USB issues is an area of focus at the moment.

    You're not going to get speeds of 120MB/s over USB3. USB is a resource hog. You should get faster speeds than on the front USB 2.0 port but don't expect the impossible. Disk speed, CPU etc. are all limiting factors.
  • I understand I likely won't reach the highest possible speeds but 24MB/s is not what I paid for. I know this is capable of a lot better than that. If you had to give an estimate on how long it'd be before some USB 3.0 patches would be applied what would that be? I understand that even those may not provide a solution for me but just trying to get an idea of how fast or often you guys update. Thanks for the reply.

    What speeds do you get on the front USB2 port compared with what you get on the USB 3 ports on the back? Are the speeds faster on the USB3 port?

    When gigabit NASes first came out they were a bit faster over gigabit than they would be over 100 megabit. The extra speed was enough to justify the inclusion of a gigabit port despite the fact the NASes couldn't get remotely close to the theoretical limitation of the standard.

    I don't work for NetGear. I'm just a beta tester. I don't know what patches they have applied. If and only if the patches are open source, then you could look to the GPL (http://www.readynas.com/gpl) to see what's included.

    What filesystem is on your USB disk? Have you tried different filesystems (e.g. NTFS and EXT3 - I would suggest trying both of these)?

    Firmware updates very roughly tend to come every few months or so, I think. It does vary a bit. However often in-between production firmwares there are public betas. There hasn't been any public betas of ARM firmware yet, but there may well be at some point in the future. We'll have to wait and see.
  • Interesting - USB 2.0 port is in the 20's MB/s read & write. The better news is I'm now averaging 57 MB/s across the network and from internal SATA (on a slow drive) to both USB 3.0 ports using different drives. It's slightly slower between USB 3.0 ports - 44 MB/s. I have no idea why the rates are improving. I will test again after the next reboot and see if it holds up. Those speeds are good enough for me. Friday I will test out the new unit and see how it performs. Very weird. Never heard of a break-in period for a NAS.

    Really appreciate the responses, especially since you aren't Netgear staff.

  • More weirdness...
    After reboot none of the drives are mounted. No matter what I try or how I reboot no USB 3 devices work after a reboot unless they're in the USB 2.0 port. Power cycling the Duo V2 I get different results. Sometimes the drives are automatically seen and other times they aren't. If they aren't, a power cycle of the USB 3.0 drive and it is mounted again. If you have to disconnect the USB 3.0 drive from the Duo you have to power cycle it to allow for automounting again.

    Tried EXT3 and it works as well as NTFS. Definitely not any better with throughput. Results were toward the bottom of the NTFS averages but still better than USB 2.0.

    Possibly. Maybe it's that plus the buggy interaction between the drivers and the onboard USB 3 controller. There's still no way to know whether or not a working external USB 3.0 disk will be automatically mounted after a power cycle. I do know that it will be mountable though and work at the better speeds. I know it definitely won't work after a restart/reboot. So many variations I'm hoping this unit has a defective controller.

    This is what you see in dmesg on the new Duo V2 when attaching a USB 3.0 drive.

    The exact same problem is present in various distros most of which were resolved in the first or second quarter of 2011. I'd be able to work with it more if the driver was a module. As is, there's no way to unload the driver except via shutdown as a reboot breaks it.

    Same behavior down to how you plug in devices and multiple attempts to get drives recognized.

    The Duo V2 has the same NEC controller as in that bug report with a different revision.


    After shutting down and rebooting at least 6 times the drive was finally recognized. Still can't reboot and be able to use USB3.0. Speeds were immediately in the proper range though. Since no Jedi has responded I will initiate a trouble ticket for engineering at Netgear.
  • All I can say is wow. Hung up on 6 times by Netgear support since 4pm. Finally got through by being transferred from another department. Tech would not create a ticket for me. NO SUPPORT FOR THIS DEVICE apparently. He offered to contact me whenever there is an update to the firmware. I asked him if he was just not going to create a ticket or what and at that point he just stops responding. He got my callback number at the beginning of the call. No callback so I assume there was no phone problem. I hung up after 4 minutes of silence. I will try once more before returning this and the new working Netgear router I just bought a week ago. Really shocked at the quality of support so far. I hope this is just due to one bad tech and a flood of post-xmas calls.

    **update - Just spoke with a few other people and created a case regarding this. Looks like the hangups and first call were just bad luck.
