ReadyNAS NV+ v2 RND4000-200EUS

the model is RND-4B, but this system won't allow me to type that in. 😞
there used to be a forum on here for Mac users, and that seems to have disappeared. so i'm hoping someone will be able to help me anyway.
the IP address for this box always use to be 192.168.0.3, but for some reason it is now 192.168.168.168 (and i haven't changed ANYTHING!), and i can't access it either through the browser or the Finder. (t shows up in the Finder, but won't connect, or allow me to change the address). Help!!! Many thanks for reading.

NV+ v2 RND4000-200EUS is exactly what we need to know. RND-4B would have required some followup.

Your home network is using 192.168.0.x addresses, so you can't reach 192.168.168.168. That has nothing to do with your Mac btw.
Your NAS uses DHCP to get an IP address from your router. If that doesn't work for some reason, it fails over to 192.168.168.168. That allows people to still access their NAS using a direct-connect procedure (though that is rather cumbersome). So we want to get DHCP working again.
First confirm that the NAS actually has an ethernet connection. The LED next to the ethernet connection on the back should be lit. If it's not, then post back, and don't try any of the steps below.
If the NAS ethernet is active, then try this:
- disconnect the ethernet cable from the NAS
- reboot the router
- reconnect the ethernet cable and see if you get a 192.168.0.x address
If that fails, then try rebooting the NAS, and see if that resolves it.
If it still insists on 192.168.168.168, then try doing an OS reinstall using the NAS boot menu. That will reset your ReadyNAS network configuration, and will also reset your admin password back to password. It shouldn't affect your data or other settings. Thanks very much indeed, that's brilliant. Btw, I mentioned the RND-4B, because that's the model number according to the sticker on the back. Confusing! 🙂
Anyway, that's worked about 99.99899%! 🙂
It was connected (little light was on), so I disconnected it, rebooted the router and reconnected the NAS box, and it gave it an address, which was 192.168.1.138. I can now access it through the Finder and the browser, and just to make sure, I rebooted the computer, and it was still the same. 🙂
For some reason, this router has an address of 192.168.1.1, and it's assigned 192.168.1.246 to the computer (though IP Scanner calls it 'unidentified hidden device', I checked the MAC address). There's also another device, according to IP Scanner, also 'unidentified hidden device', and that's 192.168.1.148. I'm assuming that's my network switch, which is also by Netgear. Is there any way to tell?
I'm very grateful that it's now working, and will also presumably when I come to plug in my other (older) NAS box later. But any clarity as to why the address changed would also be very helpful, so I can learn from the experience. Also, could you confirm that the 148 address is my network switch? (There's nothing else on the network currently.)
I moved house recently, and this is a new router from a new ISP. The old one was 192.168.0.1, hence the 192.168.0.3 for the NAS BOX. But it has been working fine, even though the new router is 192.168.1.1. That's also strange, but as it was in my favour, I didn't question it!
Re. the network switch, here's the set-up: router connected to outside world and network switch; computer, and both NAS boxes also connected to the network switch (though I actually access the computer by wifi, so I guess that doesn't need to be connected?)

If your computer is connected both through ethernet and wifi, then the computer can use both connections. Though in that situation the computer would usually choose ethernet. You could disconnect the computer from the switch, but you will get faster speeds if you just use the ethernet connection.

That is strange, but probably not something that can be diagnosed retrospectively.

What model is the switch?
Netgear "smart" switches and managed switches have IP addresses, but their unmanaged switches don't. If you do have a smart or managed switch, then http://192.168.1.148 should bring up the web admin UI for the switch.

It's a Prosafe GS108 8-port Gigabit Switch, which it appears is unmanaged. So I've no idea what the 148 address is. But I've had IP Scanner open while I've been typing, and now the 148 address has disappeared. I noticed it after I'd switched the wifi off. But switching back to wifi doesn't make it appear again.

To do a full quote, just click on the "quote" button in the tool bar. You can then edit out parts, though in many cases it works out better if you switch to HTML mode to do those deletions. Rich Text mode sometimes messes up the formatting.

If your PC was connecting both over wifi and ethernet, then it would have had two IP addresses. So that is one possibility.
Of course any wifi device (phone, tablet, e-book reader, wireless printer, etc) would also have an IP address when it is connected to your network.

The 148 address has gone now. There are no other devices on the network. 🙂
