Ref #16958105 - No Volume after Expansion / Firmware Upgrade

Hello everyone. I have a Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 6.

During a process of upgrading drives and updating firmware (with the intent of creating an X-RAID2 volume with more than 16 TB of drives), the volume and shares were lost.

I need help to repair the volume, restore the shares, and/or recover the data on the NAS.

I looked at threads like http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=57612&p=326044&hilit=no+volume#p326044, and http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=57954 , but I could not figure out what to do from them. I want to save the data on the NAS if at all possible.

Below are the step by step details of what occurred:

The ReadyNAS Ultra 6 was filled with six, 2TB hard drives in X-RAID2 configuration, and it had RAIDiator 4.2.9 firmware. It had a volume on it and some network shares which were working well.

With the ReadyNAS turned on, I physically removed the first 2TB hard drive from the NAS, replaced it with a blank 3TB hard drive, and waited for the new hard drive to sync.

At the end of this process, the sync of the new disk was completed successfully, Frontview / RAIDar showed the new disk status as OK, and the volume and shares remained in place with all data intact.

I serially repeated this process three more times, so that disks 1, 2, 3, and 4 were upgraded from 2TB to 3TB. After this, the volume and shares remained in place. Each disk took less than 1 day to sync.

I next went into Frontview and performed a firmware upgrade to RAIDiator 4.2.19. As part of this, I rebooted the ReadyNAS Ultra 6 from Frontview. Afterwards, the volume and shares remained in place; the capacity of the volume was improved by a couple of TB.

I wanted to replace the 5th and 6th disks with 3 TB drives as well to finish the process. This past Sunday I took out the 5th of the 2TB hard drives and replaced it with a 3TB hard drive. The 3TB hard drive started to sync.

On Tuesday I tried to access the ReadyNAS Ultra. The shares were down. I could not access Frontview.

RAIDar showed the 5th disk syncing with 67% completed. I was surprised by this because the previous 4 disks had synced in less than 24 hours, this one had been left to sync for about 48 hours.

I turned the ReadyNAS off and on using the power button on the unit. After power cycling, the shares were still down, this time however I was able to log into Frontview.

When checking "Volume Settings" or "Share Listing" in Frontview, I got the following message: "No volume exists. Some menu options are available only if a valid volume exists."

When checking "Status: Health", I could see six disks as expected, with OK status and green solid dots, except for disk 5, which was a flashing green dot (still syncing). RAIDar also depicted six disks with OK status and green solid dots, except for disk 5, which was syncing.

After a few hours, disk 5 finished syncing, but the lack of a volume was unchanged. Restarting the ReadyNAS did not change anything.

How can I repair the volume, restore the shares, and/or recover the data on the NAS?

Re: Ref #16958105 - No Volume after Expansion / Firmware Upg

NetGear engineers accessed the device via SSH and repaired the volume, which was nice.

I requested but did not receive information about the cause of the problem or the commands they used to fix the problem. This was disappointing.
