Replacement for ReadyNAS ultra 4

I have one of those 6-drives NAS from a few years ago, PNDP600E-100NAS or something.

I got an error message saying disk # 4 has failed.

I took out the bottom left disk which I think is disk #4 and ran some test on it and it shows the disk it 100% fine(however its a green type of drive from Seagate, I think one of these LP 5900 RPM ones)

Anyway, I am wondering if the bottom left is considered disk 4? I don't know how these things are numbered?

Does it go disk 1 is top left, then next to it disk 2,etc.... then on the bottom disk 4 being bottom left and disk 6 being bottom right ?

1. I don't understand why its saying a perfectly good drive is " dead" unless it was slow to respond(green drive=bad performance) and incorrectly assumed it was dead when it was 100% fine)?

2. Please verify that bottom left is Drive # 4 and I did not get the wrong drive.

Thanks. 2016-05-23 02_18_33-ReadyNAS Frontview [6XRAID210] Hard drive green - Opera.png

Re: Replacement for ReadyNAS ultra 4

Drives are numbered left to right, and top to bottom.  So the bottom left drive is drive 4.

Some quick tests of the drive might look ok, but the drive could still be dead.

Try testing the drive with Seagate's Seatools utility.  You can also download the logs of the NAS, and look at the errors reported on the disk.  Did you receive any email alerts that the drive was in trouble?  (BTW if you don't have email alerts set up on the NAS you definitely should).

Re: Replacement for ReadyNAS ultra 4

This new forum forces me to type my model number on every reply or else it won't let me send a message?

Now I'm getting an error message on this forum of " Body (Include additional detail including model version, firmware, OS and environment where relevant.)"

Ok, I will copy and paste this and see if that lets me send the message then.

Name: RAIDiator-x86
Version: 4.2.28
Date: Mon Jun 22 15:31:19 2015
Size: 54 MB
Description: Release notes

Anyway, back on topic. It looks like drive 1 is in bad shape and has warning messages(also a Green drive by the way) however all I get before that is "

Wed Jun 3 03:42:14 EDT 2015

Disk failure detected.

It does not say why or even if its drive # 4. I am making that assumption.

Perhaps it was slightly too slow to respond and the system kicked the drive out and flagged it incorrectly ad a dead drive since green drives are slower than normal drives + had 5900 RPM vs 7200 ??

This is every log I have(unless you know how to get greater detail logs)

What do you think?

Thu Jun 4 05:06:04 EDT 2015Detected increasing command timeouts[54] on disk 1 [ST32000542AS, 6XW25TN7]. This often indicates an impending failure. Please be prepared to replace this disk to maintain data redundancy.

Wed Jun 3 03:42:14 EDT 2015If the failed disk is used in a RAID level 1, 5, or X-RAID volume, please note that volume is now unprotected, and an additional disk failure may render that volume dead. If this disk is a part of a RAID 6 volume, your volume is still protected if this is your first failure. A 2nd disk failure will make your volume unprotected. If this disk is a part of a RAID 10 volume, a failure of this disk's mirror partner will render the volume dead. It is recommended that you replace the failed disk as soon as possible to maintain optimal protection of your volume.

Re: Replacement for ReadyNAS ultra 4

I did a reply already but I don't see it. I think it said something about waiting for approval.

I had used this raidsystem then I went on a trip for a few months and came back and completely forgot about it. So it has been off for a very long time. I don't believe I got an email alert about it however I could be wrong since so much time passed.

I spoke to someone else who said I should probably email you the logs however I don't see how to email you on this forum. ( the old forum was a lot easier and less restrictive to work with)

Anyway, here is a link to the zip file containing the more detailed log files. I don't know where to look to find why the drive failed.

If you could please tell me what file I should be looking at, I would sure appreciate it.

Here is the link to my google drive containing the zip log files.

If that does not work, try this one.

My theory is that since this was a green drive type drive, the performance was lacking and your system may have flagged it as a "DEAD DRIVE" because it took too long to respond.

I have tested it with current Seatools software and all test check out 100% fine. SMart test, Short test, Long test(over 8 hours long), even used Crystal disk info software and it shows up as a good drive.

That is my theory, you could probably tell better if you looked at the log files. Using the log files in the frontview web admin page, I   see something about errors on Disk 1, however the drive that showed up as a dead drive is Disk 4 not disk 1.

Thanks.

Re: Replacement for ReadyNAS ultra 4

Did you get a chance to look at the logs? Any idea why that drive was thrown out?
