Samba daemon using almost 100% CPU

I've only noticed this happening for around 6 months now. I'm running the latest R4 firmware on my Pro 6.

Every now and then I will notice file transfers are slow, so I ssh in and fire up top. smbd is using at least 95% of the CPU the whole time, even when no file transfers or media streaming or anything is going on.

I have no modifications on this unit other than a crashplan install and I upgraded the RAM to 2GB, which tested fine.

I tried leaving the crashplan service disabled for a while to see if it was putting extra load on the unit and smbd CPU usage just stays where it is.

What could be causing this process to spike and stay there when the NAS is otherwise idle?

      Assuming that's /dev/md0?

Mine shows 44% used; 2.2GB available.

Strange thing is a reboot will usually resolve the issue. I rebooted after my initial post and it seems to be ok still today. However, it is typically only a matter of time before I notice file transfers starting to slow down. And when I log on and run top it will be smbd at 95%+

        Does this happen often?

I'm wondering if shutting down crashplan for a bit makes sense (if only to rule it out).

  • Sorry to ressurect this thread. I ended up uninstalling CrashPlan for a while and switched back to the original 1GB DIMM of memory my Pro 6 came with. And to no avail.

I was wondering if perhaps a reinstall of the OS might be worth a try? This is non destructive to my data from what I understand. I assume I will have to reinstall addons etc. however. Although I would probably reinstall and leave it running for a week or so without addons or any changes etc.

    Thoughts?

Can you send in your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)?
