Tftp
How exactly do I go about doing a TFTP recovery before I consign my NV+ 4000 to the bin.
I''ve tried USB recovery but that just hangs so TFTP is my last option.
I have downloaded all teh files anf TFTP prob and set it up.
My issue seems to be that my TFTP program uses 127.0.0.1 instead of the 192.168.125.1 I have set my Computer to.
I tried seting my router to the 192.168.125.2 address and my pc to 192.168.125.1 but that doesn't work either.
Am I doing something wrong or is the NV+ just incapable of recovering.
I'm getting the arp error which i think is a timeout error so not sure if the nas is just not connecting correctly.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhen did you purchase your NV+ (v1)? Was it purchased brand new on/after Aug 21, 2007? If so it would still be under warranty and you should contact NetGear tech support (http://www.readynas.com/support) and post your case number preferably editing the thread title (i.e. subject of first post in thread to include it).
What problem did you have that meant you thought you needed to try boot recovery?
How many different USB keys did you try? Not all USB keys are compatible. - beljim7419AspirantHi,
I didn't buy it brand new i bought it second hand on the assumption the previous owner didn't know how to configure it.
When I got it and droped a hard drive in it just wouldn't boot up. just keeps saying booting but the drive doesn't spin up so something isn't right.
On the safe side thought I would just update the firmware to the latest via USB recovery but that just hangs on USB initialize. something is read on the thumb drive and the nas fan slows down but never finishes.
I have tried 3 thumb drives and a micro sd card in a dongle of which all are being read by the NAS but like i say never finishes.
So tried TFTP not sure if i'm doing it right because the service only seems to want to use 127.0.0.1. Went through the router also to make sure it was all on 192.168.125.x but just get an ARP error whatever that is. Either it's not accessing th efiles on the pc or it too is failing.
Not sure what else i can do.
Should i be getting some hard drive spin? I'm assuming the recovery doesn't need hard drives in.
I have tried 2 different Hard drives and even bought new ram for the NAS to rule that out.
I can only assume the nand chip or whatever gets written too is not working right.
I can not do a system diag either, again it just seems to never finish, Tried Resetting to and yep again never finishes and no hard drive spin.
Shame as I was looking forward to using it. :( Oh , well. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredPlease put stock memory back in.
If you turn the NAS off, then press and hold the power button only do you see the boot options appear on the LCD one by one? - beljim7419AspirantYes all the menus work on the lcd display when holding the power button and when i hold in th ereset button. Just nothing seems to complete.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSo you've tried firmware (OS) re-install, factory default etc.?
- chirpaLuminaryIf you choose Tech Support via the power button boot menu, does RAIDar see it after 2-3 minutes?
- beljim7419AspirantTried os and factory re-install yes.
I don't have a tech support mode option.
I have
05 Short diag
10 TFTP conf
15 Long diag
20 USB boot
25 Memort test
50 TFTP Boot - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired

What happened when you tried these?beljim7419 wrote:

Then you're running very, very old firmware.
When you attempted a TFTP boot recovery, you would need to have held the power button in for 50 seconds - beljim7419AspirantA very old firmware you say. Wonder if I try a very old firmware recovery i might get somewhere.
I have tried tftp at 50 secs but i get arp error and keep trying to update the kernal i think. I'm not sure i am doing it right because the tftp prog has an ip of 127.0.0.1 not 192.168.125.1.
I have tried through the router setting its ip to 192.168.1.2 and my pc to 192.168.125.1 as the readme says but still with the arp error. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhat OS are you using on your client machine (e.g. Windows XP?)
What TFTP program are you using?
