Unable to access Readynas NV+ shares using Windows 7

I have two ReadyNAS NV+ systems. one is running 4.1.6 and the other running 4.1.7. i had drives mapped using windows 7 to N:\\NAS_IP1\media and M:\NAS_IP2\media. Ive had them up and running for ages with no issues. Recently i unplugged both ReadyNAS systems from the switch, which i had to use briefly for something else. When i plugged them back in i was unable to access any of the shares. When i opened "my computer" the share drives are there but are marked with a red X.

The first thing i did after i couldnt access the shares is i removed the previously mapped shares and tried to re-add the mapped shares, i rebooted both the readyNAS systems and the windows 7 computer several times in the troubleshooting process. I cant get them to reconnect.

here are some of the other things ive tried,

1. I tried changing the local security policy using this (faq.php#Why_am_I_not_able_to_access_ReadyNAS_share_that_is_password_protected_with_Vista%3F)

2. Tried to changed my security mode on one of the readNAS systems from "share" to "user".

3. I tried uninstalling Symantec Endpoint Protection to see if that was causing the issue.

4. i have even tried uninstalling some recent windows updates i felt may have broken something.

(also windows firewall is turned off)

No matter what i try, when i try to map a share using windows 7 i get the password dialogue box but when i put the username and password it doesnt accept it and i get, "Windows cannot access \\NAS_IP1 Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise there might be a problem with your network. to try to identify and resolve the network problems, click diagnose" error code x80004005.

I CAN access both shares on both ReadyNAS systems using windows xp from my laptop and from another stock windows 7 installation i have running in a virtual machine.

It seems as though the issue is something with this particular window 7 install. anyone have any suggestions? What are the specific logs in the ReadyNAS i should be looking at?

  • I'm running into somewhat similar issue.

    - I can access shares with Windows XP
    - I can access shares with Windows Server 2003
    - I can access shares with Linux Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10

    ... and
    - I cannot access shares with Windows 7
    - I cannot access shares with Windows Server 2008

This is on ReadyNAS Pro and started only when I upgrades several machines to Windows 7. All same shares are still accessible with XP and Ubuntu.
  • I figured out my problem maybe this solution will work for you. Verify that the Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networks is installed on your network adapter

If not installed use the following:
Go to your main network adapter and right click for properties and hit "install".
    1. Click Add.
    2. Click Client, and then click Add.
    3. Click Microsoft, click Client For Microsoft Networks, and then click OK.
    4. Click OK.
    5. Restart

Now when you go to "my computer" and hit "network" the ReadyNAS should be discovered and clicking it will show you the shares. Mapping the drives should now work. Hope that helps someone.
  • Since this toppic seems to describe my Problem perfectly I will add my part hereafter.

I also have a problem accessing samba shares on my nv+ from a windows 7 (64bit) professional notebook. (Lenovo Thinkpad)

The Client for Microsoft Networks was in place allready on my "Intel(R) Centrino(R) Ultimate-N 6300 AGN" Wifi adapter.

I can connect to my nas via http (browser) and access the admin interface. I also see the media server in my network view, but the samba share is not visible as it is from my other pcs which are mostly win-xp based, but also include one vista pc.

I have tried several possible sollutions to this problem allready, and have lost track of all possible configurations...

If I remember Correctly i have changed 2 options in the Lokal Windows Security Guidelines concerning

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
    Send LM & NTLM responses

    and

Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
    Disable Require 128-bit encryption

    This didn't help.

I have also tried changing several configurations on my home network and on a share on my readynas.
Since I do not really know what parameters are helpful for solving my problem, I would rather ask for help here now...

For the time being I have switched the Readynas Security mode to "User" and named the workgroup to be the same as the name of my homenetwork.
My other PCs don't seem to have problems with this configuration.

Also the username of the windows user is identical to a user set up in the nas with a personal share and permissions for 3 other shares.

Please ask me for any configuration parameters, which could be responsible for my problem, since I cannot identify what
    information would be important.

    Yours

I am adding some info here which might be of use:

    C:\>nbtstat -a nas
    Drahtlosnetzwerkverbindung: (Wireless connection)
    Knoten-IP-Adresse: [foo.bar.foo.bar] Bereichskennung: []
    NetBIOS-Namentabelle des Remotecomputers
    Name Typ Status
    ---------------------------------------------
    NAS <00> EINDEUTIG(unique) Registriert(registered)
    NAS <03> EINDEUTIG Registriert
    NAS <20> EINDEUTIG Registriert
    ..__MSBROWSE__.<01> GRUPPE(group) Registriert
    WORKGROUP <1D> EINDEUTIG Registriert
    WORKGROUP <1E> GRUPPE Registriert
    WORKGROUP <00> GRUPPE Registriert
    MAC Adresse = 00-00-00-00-00-00

I have now also tried to connect to the nas as a network drive using IP-Adress instead of the Hostname.
    Another Failed attempt.

Another Sollution stated, that disabling ipv6 could solve a simmilar problem. Disabling ipv6 on my wifi adapter did not help.

I have now tried switching from home-network to workplace-network setting,
    thereby leaving the Home-Network.
For testing reasons my Share settings are atm:
    - Network recognition on
    - File and Printsharing on
    - Fileshareconnections with low encryption
    - Password protected sharing off
    - Homenetwork connections: use Useraccounts and Passwords for connections

Using the global network topology view the nas is shown correctly integrated into the network, but I still cannot access the shares other than with http.
  • are you able to map the share \\HostnameOriP\sharename ? does the password window pop-up? what error does it give you? also were you ever able to connect to this drive using your current OS setup? have you tried other windows 7 installations to connect to this drive? mine was as simple as making sure "client for Microsoft windows" was installed for my network adapter. when you go to your network card properties and hit "install" can you add any client, services, or protocols?

are you able to map the share \\HostnameOriP\sharename ?
    No.

    does the password window pop-up?
    No.

what error does it give you?
First I get to wait quite a long time while windows is trying to connect to the share.
Then it states that it could not connect. Its pretty generic.

were you ever able to connect to this drive using your current OS setup?
No - this is my first PC using Windows 7, and since I have it, I was not able to connect to my readynas from it.

have you tried other windows 7 installations to connect to this drive?
No - I only have one Win7 license a.t.m, but I was able to connect from Vista64bit and XP Sytems.

when you go to your network card properties and hit "install" can you add any client, services, or protocols?
I have 4 Network Adapters installed on my System: Wifi1(Intel(R) Centrino(R) Ultimate-N 6300 AGN), Wifi2(Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter), LAN and UMTS.
Both Wifi Adapters, which I normally use to connect in my Network have no additional Options for Installation but a "Reliable Multicast Protokol". There are no additional Clients or Services available per default.
  • i dont think it would hurt to turn on the multicast thing on the specified network adapter. is there a firewall on the system? what is the security setting on the readynas? i have mine set so it has the same workgroup name as windows 7 computer. is the current network home, work, or public? can you connect to shares on one of the xp or vista hosts from the windows 7 computer?

Is there a firewall on the system?
Im using the default windows firewall.
I have allready tried switching it off for some tests without positive results.

what is the security setting on the readynas?
Im using USER Security with a Workgroup identical to that of my Windows 7 PC.

is the current network home, work, or public?
I have my network currently set to work

can you connect to shares on one of the xp or vista hosts from the windows 7 computer?
Thats a good question - it seems I cant find other windows computers in my network.
In the Network view I can only see my own (same pc) shared folders as well as
the the Readynas Admin Icon (opens Front View) and the Media Server Icon.
But I don't really know if this analysis is representative, since the only other windows pc on my network right now
is a Virtual Machine run on MacOS.
This Machine does not appear on the global network layout view as my nas does.
    Ill run more tests tomorrow...

I will try the multicast protocol now... no change after installation.
  • i think you should leave the firewall off until the problem is resolved. also try and map a drive on another windows machine. in network neighborhood you should see the readynas both as a "storage" device where it allows you to connect via http and also as a "computer" where you can see the shared drives of the nas.
  • When mapping the drive in Windows 7 use the share name as the username and the password you set for the share as the password.
