Very slow speeds for small files (ReadyNAS NV+ #24105073)
Hi all! Been getting useful information from you guys for ages (thanks for that), but this is the first time I've needed to ask something specific to me.
[I've got support ticket #24105073 open - that was originally to deal with the failed RAID array, but now I'm rebuilding everything this new issue has come up. This is a performance question in a sense, so I've put it in the Performance folder, but really the performance is so bad that I think it's a fault rather than simply slow - let me know if I should stick it somewhere else]
My ReadyNAS NV+ v1 is giving me unusably slow performance when working with small files - either reading, writing, or deleting, each action takes 2 or 3 seconds, which individually would be OK but when you have thousands of files (which my backups do) is unacceptable. I've tested it by creating 10 very small (15 bytes each) text files and copying them over - it takes about 30 seconds (less than 2B/s!), in either direction, and also deleting them. I can see each file going over in the stats, and also deleting them is similar. In fact, just browsing around the "backup" share takes several seconds to display each folder. So really I suspect there's a fundamental problem to do with SMB or similar, each transaction is being slowed down by something.
This is a relatively recent problem, but I couldn't tell you exactly when it started because usually I'm working with bigger files and automated processes. It's come to light now because my RAID array (4x2TB) needed creating from scratch, and copying date back on is taking days and days. So this is having done a factory reset after installing firmware 4.1.14, with a completely empty default X-RAID setup. My PC and the NAS are connected over CAT5, with a gigabit switch in the middle. Jumbo frames are on (as advised by support), but I don't think that would fix the kind of behaviour I'm seeing.
Thanks in advance for your help! 😄
Cheers,
Richard

Re: Very slow speeds for small files (ReadyNAS NV+ #24105073
Why did the array need recreating from scratch (why did it fail)?
Do you have jumbo frames enabled on the pc and switch?
Have you tried disabling jumbo frames on all devices involved in the file transfer? Jumbo frames seems to create more problems than it solves.
Have you tried a direct connection between pc and nas (try this if disabling jumbo frames does not help)?
Have you tried changing the cables?
Have you thoroughly tested all 4 disks with vendor tools extended/long tests?
