Volume expansion on Ultra 6

Volume expansion on Ultra 6

I had a Ultra 4+ with 4x3Tb WD30EZRS-00J99B0, Raidiator 4.2.15. Worked well with full capacity.
Due to a drop of the box (no power on), the hardware failed (not possible to start).
I bought a Ultra 6 and successfully put the 4 disc volume into the new box.
I upgraded to 4.2.22, and all worked well.
I then added one 3Tb WD30EFRX-68AX9N0 and the volume expanded to 11110Gb.
I then added one more 3Tb WD30EFRX-68AX9N0 and selected to expand the volume instead of extra redundancy.
Then I got the message that volume expansion failed. All 6 discs is listed on the volume screen with 2790Gb allocated.
I have restarted the box, but get the same expansion failure message.
I am now doing a disc scrub, but I guess this won´t help.

Anyone got an idea on how to resolve this?

Re: Volume expansion on Ultra 6

The full capacity of 3TB disks would only be recognised on 4.2.16 or later.

Could you download your logs (Status > Logs > Download all logs), extract the contents of the zip file and post the contents of initrd.log?

Re: Volume expansion on Ultra 6

As I thought. When you migrated to the Ultra 6 the firmware was downgraded to 4.2.15. This is not good. Not sure if this contributed to what you are facing. Before the migration you should have put a spare disk (must not be from your array) in the Ultra 6, ensured the firmware was up to date in the Ultra 6, powered down, removed the spare disk and then migrated your disks across.

Also what disks were installed on the 6th January 2011 when you last did a factory default? It's possible that you are hitting the limit of 8TB of online expansion over the lifetime of the volume.

Re: Volume expansion on Ultra 6

The only disks ever in the Ultra 4+ volume was 4 x WD30EZRS. I started with two, then increased by one more, then the last fourth. I guess that I faced the same problem then and had to factory default it, I cannot remember.
Is it possible to downgrade Raidiator (to which version, if so?), or do I have to do a backup and factory default it again?

Re: Volume expansion on Ultra 6

You don't need to downgrade RAIDiator, in fact the downgrade you did when you migrated your array was bad.

Backup your data, do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) and restore data from backup.

Re: Volume expansion on Ultra 6

BTW: I did not downgrade, the box did it when I input the Ultra 4+ volume in the Ultra 6 box.

fred57: could you please open the tech support ticket and send us your system logs for review? It's harder to help out w/o having system logs and tracking issues.
