cannot access one of my ReadyNAS Pro unit's after modem change

Hi. I just got a new modem from my internet provider a couple days ago and they said it already has a built in router so not to use my router but instead just to plug my 2 computers and 2 NAS units into the modem. However now I cannot access any files from one of my ReadyNAS Pro units. Using windows 7 64 bit, when I right click on "Network" and choose "properties" and then click on "See full map" I can see the 2 ReadyNAS Pro units, but when I hover my mousepointer over them, the mousepointer only turns into a hand icon on one of the ReadyNAS Pro units, and that's the one that I can right click on and get some options to click on like "view device webpage" etc. ..the other ReadyNAS Pro unit will show some information when I hover over it like MAC address and IP address but the icon does not change into a hand and nothing happens when I right click on it. The IP address for the ReadyNAS Pro unit that I can access is 192.168.0.243...the IP address for the one that I can't access is 192.168.1.107... if I unplug the ReadyNAS Pro that I can't access from the modem, and click on the "See full map" link, it no longer shows up on the network map, which is to be expected. Also, for the ReadyNAS that I can access, the backup folder is mapped to drive Z and the media folder is mapped to drive Y, but I don't remember how I did that. So today I tried to map the other ReadyNAS Pro to see if that will fix the problem, but windows does not offer it as an option for me to map.

Also there are 2 ethernet ports on the back of the ReadyNAS Pro units and the cables are plugged into the bottom ethernet ports on both ReadyNAS Pro units and I don't know if that is useful information, but on the first ReadyNas Pro, there is tape across the top ethernet port as if to make sure I don't plug it into that one. I don't know if that information is helpful in any way but probably not.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to do or what I should search for to try to figure this out. Perhaps I will have to get the internet provider to somehow allow me to use my old router again but when the Tech was here to install it he said the new modem won't work with the new router. I probably need to do more research on my own to post more useful information but I thought I'd try this post first incase this is enough information to get help. It's been a couple of years or so since I hooked up the 2 ReadyNas Pro units and I even forget how I set up the windows Home network. Information doesn't stay in my brain for very long, it seems with computers I have to keep relearning everything. Thanks

Thanks very much, your suggestion worked!...after I followed your instructions I was able to right click on both of the ReadyNas Pro units, so that was a great sign...I still couldn't access any files from the problem ReadyNAS or see it in windows explorer...then I shut down the computer and rebooted it, and now both ReadyNas units show up under the Network section of windows explorer just like they used to, and I can see the folders like I used to...maybe I'll map that ReadyNAS to a couple of drive letters like I mapped the other one later, but for now everything is back to normal....also I guess I could do an OS reinstall on the one that I forgot the password to but since it's working ok there's probably no reason to do that....or at least no rush to do that...and I'd probably want to back up everything on that ReadyNAS to a set of external hard drives before I tried it. So thanks again, now I can get some of my work done...what a relief.

Your new router works in the 192.168.0.x space, and 192.168.1.107 is out of range.  You must have manually assigned the 192.168.1.107 address (as a "static" address) sometime in the past.

 

You can connect the Pro and a PC to the old router (even though it is not connected to the internet), and that should let you access the Pro by its IP address (http://192.168.1.107/admin).  Then reset the Pro to use the "automatic" dhcp address. That should get you a 192.168.0.x address when you reconnect it to the new router.

 

Other options:

(a) do a direct connect between the pro and the PC (running the ethernet cable directly between them), and manually set the IP address of the PC temporarily to 192.168.0.100.  Then access by IP address as above.

 

(b) do an OS reinstall on the pro (not a factory reset).  That will reset the IP address to automatic, and also reset the admin password to netgear1, Other settings are not changed.

 

FWIW, if the old router has a standard ethernet WAN port, you can still use it with the new gateway.   This is "double routing".  If you forward ports in the router, you'd need to forward them twice (gateway->router and then router->pro).  That's the only inconvenience. However, the new gateway might be a better choice than the older router.  What models are they?

Wow, that's a lot of great information thanks! I just now woke up and have to do a few things first but in a bit I'll study your information and work on those solutions. ...the router is cisco linksys  simultaneous dual-n band wireless router WRT610N V1...the new modem is from internet provider Shaw, cisco model DPC3848V ...I'll let you know how it goes

when I went to http://192.168.1.107/admin i got a warning message saying your connection is not private, etc. It said it was unsafe to proceed but I clicked on the link anyway ...then I got a popup box to say
"The server https://192.168.1.107:443 requires a username and password. The server says: Control Panel"

I saw a password I wrote down a long time ago but don't see a username so I tried "admin", and it worked! Thanks! now I'm not quite sure how to change the IP address...Under the Network setting, - DHCP section - do I click in the square that says "Enable DHCPv4 service?
under that square it currently shows the following settings:
Starting IPv4 Address: 192.168.1.1
Ending IPv4 Address: 192.168.1.167

but if I understand your explanation, it seems I'm supposed to have the numbers start with 192.168.0 ? or maybe I missunderstood so not sure what to do...

when I click on the "interfaces" section it shows
IPv4 assignment set to "Use values below" ... the other option is to "use values from a DHCP server
then under that, it shows
IPv4 address: 192.168.1.107
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.1
IPv6 assignment: set to OFF ... the other options are "configure automatically" and "Use Values Below" but there are no values below that, only some stuff about VLAN Setting and Performance Settings.

I guess when I have time later I should go thru some tutorials on how to navigate the ReadyNAS Pro 6 administration settings so I don't waste other people's time...I assume there is some kind of tutorial somewhere... thanks for your time and help....I'm sure you already gave me enough information so I can figure it out from here, but I'm so close now, if you have time to direct me to the finish line that would be a nice bonus.

In your first post, you said you couldn't access 192.168.1.107, but you could access 192.168.0.243.  Based on your last post, I am thinking you got those backwards.

 

So you can reach 192.168.1.107.  Can you reach 192.168..0.243???

 Hi thanks again. With my 2 computers and 2 ReadyNAS Pro connected to the new modem, I can't access 192.168.1.107...following your instructions, I disconnected one of my computers from the new modem and plugged it into the old router, and I also disconnected my ReadyNAS Pro (192.168.1.107) from the new modem and connected it to the old router...so on that computer I can now access 192.168.1.107, but since my old router is not connected to the internet, I can't access the internet on that computer. My other computer is still connected to the new modem along with my other ReadyNAS Pro ( 192.168.0.243) and that is how I am currently able to connect to the internet...hopefully that makes sense....now on the computer that isn't connected to the internet I am able to get into the ReadyNAS Pro settings but I don't understand how to fix the DHCP address...the plan is that once I am able to fix the DHCP address I will plug the computer and ReadyNAS Pro into the new modem along with the other computer and ReadyNAS pro. thanks very much...please let me know if I need to clarify or provide more info

one more thing, I don't  know if it's significant but on the computer and ReadyNAS pro (192.168.0.243) that is connected to the new modem, I tried to access the settings on that ReadyNAS pro to see if that could help me understand what's going on or give me a hint on how to set the DHCP on the other ReadyNAS pro, but the password that I have written down for that ReadyNAS pro doesn't work...I don't know why it doesn't work, but I read the instructions on how to reset the password but it doesn't look like I enabled the administrator password recovery because it just keeps asking me for a favorite color...I tried different colors but none worked and that's not a security question I would use anyway...so if I want access to those settings I guess I'll have to perform an OS reinstall reboot but I don't want to worry about that now since I don't currently have any problems with that ReadyNAS pro

Ok.  So you connected the Pro using 192.168.1.107 to the old router and looked at the config.  You forgot to say that.

 

So (using the old router), just reset the ipv4 assignment to "use address from a dhcp server" and then click apply on the bottom right.  Then shut down the NAS and reconnect it to the new router.

 

BTW, the security warning is usual, so just ignore it.

 

 

 

On the other NAS, if you can't remember the password you will need to do an OS reinstall from the front panel.  The default admin password is "netgear1"
