Re: kernel panic
You may wish to run the memory test (http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/hardware/is_there_a_way_i_can_verify_if_my_memory_is_good)
Please also power down the NAS, remove disks (label order), connect to SATA port on PC and check using vendor tools
It's possible you have one or more bad disks.

Re: kernel panic
Why would you want to install such an old obsolete version of RAIDitor? That is the version that was replaced in Feb. 2008. There have been a lot of improvements and enhancements since then, including the support for larger drives, larger volumes and larger block size. Using versions prior to 4.00 you would be limited to 2TB volumes (effectively limiting you to the space afforded by 750GB drives, even if you had 1TB drives installed).
The notes to version 4.00 points to the fact that once you have upgraded to that point, you cannot go back to a prior version (3.x) without performing a factory default which will wipe out all data on your drives.
