RN314 USB 3.0 disconnects

Hi,

I use Firmware 6.1.6 (so the latest one).
An netgear Agent (open ticket) told me to update the bios (not firmware).
The orginal post is on the bottom.
I have followed your instructions.
At Point 4 i plug in USB Flash drive in front USB.
I press power button and wait until power led becomes solid (on Display booting...)
After about 60 seconds the power led becomes solid.
(i get an email from nas, usb drive is connected, an all files are on the Flash drive)
Now i press the power button on the display appears --> HOLDING POWER WILL FORCE power OFF!!!
After about 3 seconds, holding the power button, the NAS shuts down
I´m afraid i do something wrong because i can´t hold power button for more than 3-4 seconds because the nas shuts down immediately (like a Computer when power button is pressed more than 3 seconds)
Thank for your help!

Best Regards!

We have the following update for you.
You need to update the BIOS.
See how to below.

Update RN314 BIOS
You can download RN312/RN314 BIOS files in my Dropbox,
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/qxng5oaw354xfy9/AQPcAInF_u
1. Create USB DOS boot driver in Windows, double click HPUSBFW.exe to execute it.
File system select “FAT32”, Check “Create a DOS startup disk”, “Using DOS system files located at” should point to where HPUSBFW directory is located. Click Start to format the USB drive. Note: All data on flash drive will be erased.

2. Once format complete, click “Close” button. The USB drive should now have following 3 files, they are hidden files.
E:\>dir /a
Volume in drive E has no label.
Volume Serial Number is A478-2FAD

Directory of E:\

05/11/1998 07:01 PM 222,390 IO.SYS
05/11/1998 07:01 PM 0 MSDOS.SYS
05/11/1998 07:01 PM 93,880 COMMAND.COM
3 File(s) 316,270 bytes
0 Dir(s) 258,142,208 bytes free

3. Copy follow 4 files from BIOS directory to USB drive: AFUDOS.EXE (flash utility), fdapm.com (Power off utility), 20131105.rom, AUTOEXEC.BAT (Auto execute script). After copy, the flash drive should have following 7 files:

G:\>dir /a
Volume in drive G is USBRECOVERY
Volume Serial Number is EA3D-70D3

Directory of G:\

1998/05/11 19:01 222,390 IO.SYS
1998/05/11 19:01 0 MSDOS.SYS
1998/05/11 19:01 93,880 COMMAND.COM
2013/11/06 13:32 2,097,152 20131105.rom
2012/07/04 01:54 161,008 AFUDOS.exe
2007/12/20 02:03 7,345 fdapm.com
2014/02/24 10:36 58 AUTOEXEC.BAT
8 File(s) 2,581,833 bytes
0 Dir(s) 7,727,988,736 bytes free

4. RN314 try to boot from external USB flash. Plug in USB driver into front USB port, power on RN314, Simply press and hold USB button 10 seconds AFTER power LED becomes solid. Then wait until system power off automatically.

I don't own a 314, so I don't know what buttons it has... But it sounds as though you were instructed to press and hold the USB button, but you're pressing the Power button instead.

Re: RN314 USB 3.0 disconnects

If you sent your logs to support what was the date in bios_ver.log ?

This BIOS update includes an update to the USB3 firmware so it should help with USB3 compatibility.

Take a look at http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/22782/~/rn314-faqs

How to boot from External USB Flash?
Follow NETGEAR instructions to make a service USB flash drive.
Plug the USB flash drive into the front USB port.
Press and hold Backup button.
Press the Power button to power on the system and wait for blue power LED becomes solid, wait 10 more seconds. Backup button can now be released.
Wait until USB boot finishes service. Typically, system will auto power off after service done. Or work with Netgear tech support to verify service was successful.

I recommend hooking up an external display via the HDMI port so you can see what the NAS is doing. When doing a BIOS update should see it boot with a Windows 98 screen (you are booting a DOS disk after all), and then see it run some commands including the BIOS update and then finally the FDAPM command to power off.

Remove the USB key after the NAS has shutdown and boot the NAS normally.

For future boots from USB flash drives the process will be different after the BIOS upgrade. Support can advise you on the different steps you would need to do should this be required at some point in the future.

Re: RN314 USB 3.0 disconnects

Hmmm.
I'm curious, why did you need to do a bios update supportit?
I hope this is not something that's going to be required on other units?

Re: RN314 USB 3.0 disconnects

As I mentioned above "This BIOS update includes an update to the USB3 firmware so it should help with USB3 compatibility."

Are you also having USB3 issues?

Note the BIOS above is only for the 312/314. There are also BIOS updates for other models such as your 316 which use the same USB3 controller.

Re: RN314 USB 3.0 disconnects

You said the bios "includes an update". I take it from your response that this update is the primary and only indication for the bios release; I had not concluded that after reading your post.
I don't have usb3 problems.

Re: RN314 USB 3.0 disconnects

Well there would be other changes but for most users unless they have a 516 this would be the most significant change from doing a BIOS update. The 312/314 share the same BIOS, the 316 one is different and the 516/716X one is different again.

Re: RN314 USB 3.0 disconnects

So not needed and only available from support anyway?
