Scan problems with Logitech Media Center 7.7 on ReadyNAS
Background: In July and August I tried about eight versions of SqueezeBox Server (now called Logitech Meids Server), mostly various daily nightlies of version 7.6, and came to the conclusion that something about the tagging of certain files in my collection was causing the scan to hang or abort on the ReadyNAS NV+ (as part of the long process of trying to track down the cause, I installed SBS on a Windows PC and there was no problem scanning those same files). At one point I was in touch with the developer and uploaded several problem files, but he wasn't able to find any particular problem with them. Over a period of weeks, I kept repeating the scans and eventually located all problem files, removed all tags and re-tagged them, and I was eventually able to complete a scan SqueezeboxServer_7.6.2~33283-sparc-readynas.bin. I have been running that version of SBS for a few months now.
However looking at the scan logs yesterday, I got the impression that scanning was not again not completing properly. The "most recent" scan log dated from over a month ago. (Info: I have the Timer enabled and set to scan for new and changed files once a day). So I decided to try version 7.7).
I installed LogitechMediaServer_7.7.1~33737 and I seem to be having the same problem with an "Endless scanning loop" as described in a post on the Logitech forum (http://forums.logitech.com/t5/MySqueezebox-com-Squeezebox/Endless-scanning-loop-7-7/td-p/720310/page/3") . I installed LogitechMediaServer fresh according to instructions, starting with a firmware update, running Clean_SqueezeCenter_DB_1.0.bin before and after and rebooting each time. I set the options to scanning music files only. The first scan seemed to be progressing well and was about half over when I left. I came back several hours later *to find that a new scan had started*. I assume that this is what happens when a scan doesn't complete properly? I had set scan logging to Debug level, but I can't find any Scan log to try to see what file the scan hung/aborted on if any - *the new Scan log wiped out the old one*. Meanwhile the second scan ended with an error message:
<< Media scan terminated unexpectedly (Scanning Progress) Total Time:04:23:52 (Sun, Dec 4, '11 / 23:41)>>
QUESTION: What is it about the NV+ that is causing Squeezebox Server (Logitech Media Center) 7.7 to have problems with certain files, when the same server software has no problems running under Windows?
Thanks

- yupsoloAspiranthave the same problem here....

- ShardstratAspirantSince my post I've tried yet another version of 7.7 (LogitechMediaServer_7.7.1~33740-sparc-readynas.bin) and had two aborted scans. At least one of them seems to have been caused by a .cue file, and
- I made a point of putting "cue" in the list of files to exclude, but it's still trying to scan .cue files
- The scan log also seems to die somewhere in the process, so it's impossible to tell what file the scan has choked on - and there's still no logging of problem files (at least not that I know of).
I'm willing to help with de-bugging, but under those two conditions I just can't invest the time. - tupsyvejleAspirant100% same problem here..
Had tried to solve this with the Logitech support for 4 weeks now..
Stil dosen't work.. :-/ - ShardstratAspirantLogitech support knows far less about it than we do - which is a sad commentary for a piece of software that's in version 7.
What you need to do is file a bug report so the developers see it. But come to think of it, I did that and it was ignored.
In my further experimentations I've discovered that mp3 files with a specific form of tagging, from one specific poster, are what's causing the scan to choke. But I know of no attempt to figure out what that tagging problem might be OR to include flagging/logging of problem files. Instead we get a Media Player - so we can play HD wide screen movies on our Squeezebox Touch?
I apologize for sounding harsh, but I'm a little tired of being a beta tester. And I'm not even doing it for free - I paid for the damn thing. - yupsoloAspirantme too!!
anyway, downgrading solved the problem... - ShardstratAspirant... I'm using Version 7.6.2 - r33283. At least it stops the scan and gives a message that it ended abnormally, rather than just hanging. Still no indication of what file it had trouble with, though - you have to search the logs for that. AND it just started mixing up all the Title tags - a little Christmas present!
A happy Christmas to all! - JStar73AspirantOkay; I have resolved this issue for me! :D
I don't know if this is the same problem for everyone, but I was experiencing the similar problem where the scanning would not complete.
   Looks like it is related to a corrupted file
This is what I did to resolve my music listings...
Settings > Basic Settings > Rescan Media Library > [Clear library and rescan everything] > [Rescan]
This will start a new scan - it scans in alphabetical order, so have a directory open and follow the scan closely.
I watched it for a while (about 20mins) then it stopped.
I did a search on the list of known files which were scanned before it stopped and found the file(s).
Then looked a little further down in the list of files, performed another search and didn't find them in the Logitech Media Center.
You now need to narrow down the searches between the files to find out which one(s) is/are corrupt.
You will probably find the (newish) culprit that you added to your collection.
Once found; delete the suspect file(s) and perform another full scan [Clear library and rescan everything].
That fixed it for me.
I hope it helps others.
Please reply if it does
All the best,
JStar73 - ShardstratAspirantThanks for that. What I had discovered was that certain .mp3 files from a specific poster on a Usenet group (devoted to opera broadcsats) were causing the scans to hang or abort. These files were not "corrupt" in that they would play perfectly, but there was something about the tagging that was causing the problem. In every case, if I removed all the tags and retagged the files, the scan would scan them with no problem.
I posted a couple of these files and Andy, who is or was head of SBS development I think, looked at them and said he didn't see anything particularly wrong with them.
The version of SBS I am running is v7.6.2~33283. When it finds a file it can't handle, it will throw an error message saying that the scan terminated abnormally instead of just hanging indefinitely. But it will NOT log the name of the file it had problems with. If there is a later version that does that, I'd like to know. Otherwise
I will stay with this version, because now that SBS has become a "media server" I don't expect it to focus on music files anymore, and I have already spent long hours trying to get it to work. I don't want to spend any more time with a program that's for video too. (I can't see why this was done, by the way. Personally I don't watch video on my Sqeezebox Touch.) - virgiliomiAspirantI don't believe any version of SBS/LMS logs the filename of a file it encounters issues with. I haven't changed the Scanner logging setting to be "Debug" though, so I suppose it's possible that it might do that in that logging mode. But if you DO do that, make sure to change it back or the log file will probably get to be rather large in size.
As for it becoming a "Media Server", they called it that because they added DLNA support (which works with many devices, but not everything) and thus the ability to send pictures and video to DLNA-capable devices. This was done primarily for their Logitech Revue boxes, but the primary focus of the software is definitely still music files and Squeezebox support.
