mv_xor_status +88 crash

Hi all

I recently bought a Readynas 104. Initially it had two 4TB disks in it. I added an extra 4TB last week. I added a final 4TB yesterday.

While it was resynching this final disk we had a power cut. After power was restored it booted up as normal and carried on resynching.

It appears to have crashed overnight. This morning I cannot reach it by browser and there's an error message on the RN104 screen which reads

"mv_xor_status +88"

Can anyone explain what's happening please

Thanks

    Hello endure,

Do you have full backup of the data? Does RAIDar still see the NAS? Can you still map the NAS IP?

    Welcome to the community!

      Hi Jenn

      Thanks for the welcome!

I rebooted it this morning and it just carried on resynching the drives. Everything's working normally at the moment. It's up to 58% rebuild.

I can see the volumes and all the files are there.

I was just wondering what the error msg meant. I'm also wondering whether I ought to get a UPS too :smileyvery-happy:

        Hello endure,

It is good to know you have the access to the NAS back up and running again. Once it is done resyching, please backup important data, it is highly recommended not to back up important data to just one device only.

For UPS, you might find this article informative.

        Regards,

  • I got this same error when adding a final drive. I think it's kind of silly to say "make sure this is all backed up".  If I have 6 Tb of stuff on a RAID NAS, the reason for that is I'm trying to use something solid to store the data. I don't have any other devices around that can take a 6 Tb backup.

So, I know you have to say "make sure you back up your data" but I think we know that's just to CYA.

We have always recommended having a backup of all critical data (especially when 'adding disks'); not for our sake, but to remind everyone that having all your data stored on one device is a single point of failure that you deemed an acceptable risk. Always have a backup of your data leaves you less susceptible to data loss.

The reason we buy these RAID NAS systems IS to backup the data. So basicly what your saying is if this NAS crashes the RAID is pointless? Isnt this the point of a RAID and a NAS to begin with?  Have an extra 12TB you would like to send for a backup for my backup? Im not sure im feeling to comfortable with my recent ReadyNAS purchase after seeing this comment.

Information that'd help me figure more about this one would be the firmware version you experienced this on (which lets us know what kernel you're getting).

  • Backups are absolutely essential... if your data is in the least bit important, it should be backed up. Raid is not a backup, it is just a form of hardware redundancy.

Now I fully understand that backing a large amount of data is not trivial, not at all. However, I can guarantee that trying to recover it is much more difficult. Really, the recovery path is one that is best not travelled.

I had backup in mind as I was designing my NAS data solution and I have deliberately limited my NAS capacity to a maximum of 8GB, so as to make it easier to backup - I can buy USB drives that have that capacity. I have done that and all my data is backed up - in fact it is now backed up twice (tip of the hat to StephenB). Additionally, I have it all on a UPS... just in case.

I can tell you that my entire solution was not cheap, jings no, but then I did not go out and buy it all at once. On the other hand, it is reliable even if I have an entire box go bang, and it is expandible in the future. My next backup step will be to get an affordable, easy and reliable off-site backup solution too.

    I sleep easier at night,

    Ian
