Cannot Create Hosted Network (Ad Hoc) with A6210 Adapter

W10 Pro Intel Compute Stick

netsh wlan start hostednetwork
The hosted network couldn't be started.
The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation.

The netsh utility refuses to use the A6210 to start this network. It keeps trying to use the native Compute Stick adapter, which I've disabled because its very low-power. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Netgear driver, tried uninstalling the native Realtek driver. Tried 3rd party ad-hoc network software. No change.

Is there a setting I'm missing? Netsh wlan show driver reports the A6210 is Hosted Network capable. Why isn't this working?

  • I've been doing a lot of research and it seems like, for W8 and newer, ad hoc networks can only be created through the commands level netsh utility and they can only be created using a (tailored?) version of the MS Hosted Network Virtual Driver. From what I understand, each Hosted Network-ready adapter's driver should either include one of these when installed or trigger the OS to install one when the adapter is installed.

The AC6210 adapter is doing neither of these. Despite claiming to be capable of hosted network support, until a corresponding virtual driver is installed, it seems like this adapter will never be able to create ad hoc networks. That sucks a lot.

Netgear, or NG forum representatives, please advise.

      Hi JazzMac251,

      Welcome to Community!

I have checked the manual and I was not able to see any information for Ad hoc support. Please provide me the link of the information for Ad hoc support of this adapter.

      Regards,

Including netsh wlan start hostednetwork? Everything works for me up to that point. Trying to actually start the network retuns the error I posted in the OP.

If you can start your hosted network, what driver are you on? Does your Device Manager show Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter AND Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter #2 or is there just one (make sure to go View --> Show Hidden Devices to see the virtual devices)? Is the AC6210 your only adapter? If not, are your others disabled?

I've tried everything I can think of to get this working. There must be a reason this works on your machine but not mine (assuming it does).
