Cannot set the 5GHz channel on EX3700 Range Extender

I've just purchased an AC750 WiFi Range Extender Model EX3700 and have configured it as an extender with a different SSID than the primary router.  I would like to select the channel used on the 5GHz band but that option is greyed out in the settings and only "Auto" is available.  The problem is that the Range Extender always selects the same channel as the primary router so that the two devices are broadcasting right on top of each other, causing interference.  It seems possible to directly set the channel for the 2.4GHz band (which I don't use), but not the 5GHz band.  Is this just a limitation of the EX3700 model?

Yes.  The current list includes the

  • EX7500
  • EX7700
  • EX8000

You use the fastlane feature to dedicate one of the 5G radios to the backhaul network, and use the other radio as client facing.  Note that channels used by the two radios don't overlap (one does the lower numbered channels, the other does the higher numbered channels).

Re: Cannot set the 5GHz channel on EX3700 Range Extender

When you are in extender mode, the extender needs to connect to the router, and of course that connection needs to be on the same channel that the router is using.  Since the EX3700 only has one 5G radio, it needs to use the same channel for it's client-facing network.

So this amounts to a hardware limitation that is shared by most extenders.
