Bottom line up front: I am in search of the settings that provide the best online experience specifically for Advanced Warfare (single xbox setup). I.E. provide the lowest latency experience. No I am not having any significant issues and yes I have the latest firmware. And I have the xbox setup with a reserved IP address (Static IP). I connect with a wired connection using CAT 6 Cables from modem to router and router to xbox. I have Home Telecom for ISP from Moncks Corner SC, I have cable internet 50 mbps down and 10 mbps up. Things I wish to address/ ask questions about: Question #1: UPnP, Port forwarding, or DMZ? I can get an open NAT with any of these but which one will provide the lowest latency? Question #2: Firewall, what are the best settings for xbox live? And if DMZ is used do these settings even matter? Question #3: MTU some claim this makes a difference I have played with it but can't tell for sure if it affected latency. Will it improve latency to change the MTU to something lower than the default 1500? Question #4 (Big Question): QoS, First of all the 2 besides the upstream. Wireless WMM, enable or dis enable? Downstream, I notice a custom rule can be setup to the xbox's MAC address, would this help or make latency worse? And finally, the upstream QoS, enable obviously.... Click Qos priority rule list; setup QoS rule and it shows the current rules and allows more to be created. By default xbox applications is only set to high while Skype and other useless things to me are set as highest. I changed everything that was preset as highest to high except for Netgear EVA (Not even sure what that is, anyone know?). And I set the xbox rule to Highest. So in summary Xbox and Netgear EVA are the only two set to highest everything else is something lower. So to sum up Question #4: did i do more damage than good or is there an even better setup for this? I noticed I can setup custom rules and even just setup rules for the LAN port or MAC address, would either of those be better options? Question #5: I know when setting up most QoS you have to put in your bandwidth and it must be something lower than your actual or else it all falls apart. (I.E. i get 10 mbps upstream, when I enter my upstream bandwidth in the router I must put something lower than what I actually get. Speed test vary from about 8 to 9 mbps, therefore i must put a value into the router no more than 8) When I click the button for speed test it auto puts in about 9.66 mbps. but i know sometimes i get less than that from my isp especially during peak times. So I conservatively set the upstream in the router to 8, does anybody see a problem with this or know why this QoS system would be different from others? Recap: Upstream bandwidth actual vs. value place in router. Question #6: Will turning off the wireless radios improve the wired connection latency or stability? and if so, would using a second router as an access point to handle the wireless side be a good option? Question #7 (Last one): DNS servers. I can change them on the xbox itself, would it make any difference for the xbox if; I let the xbox get DNS automatically and changed the router's DNS to google's (8.8.8.8), rather than leaving the default ISP DNS in the router and manually changing them on the xbox to google's DNS? Okay, so a lot of questions, I am not here to argue about the placeable effect and yes I understand that lag cannot be completely gotten rid of and it depends on many factors. The defaults work just fine but I have been playing Call of Duty for many years now with multiple ISP's and many different routers and setups I have learned that tweaking a setup just right gives people with no skill (like me) a nice advantage in most games. And if you combine the right setup with actual skill, well....You have all seen that person that is impossible to kill and you swear is hacking so you report them, but guess what they were not hacking. I know because I had a good setup once with verizon Fios and i was accused of cheating all the time. Unfortunately I cannot get Fiber optic internet where I live now. Also, with everything I have tried so far, the Nighthawk is by far the best router I have ever used and I have already improved my average K/D after owning it for only a few days now.Solved1.3MViews1like33CommentsBridge Mode or Access Point? What's the difference? Cascade??
Hi, Just to give you a quick background of my setup right now. I have a 4500 sqft house and currently have Uverse Internet (NVG589, 45 mbps down, 5 mbps up). I bought myself a R7000 hoping to expand the entire network. I also have a Netgear EX6100 that I use to extend the network.. So currently I have the R7000 connected in AP mode, and all my devices connect to it and I have turned WiFi off on the NVG589. I also have the EX6100 connected and its piggybacking the WiFi off the R7000. The issue I'm having is that I'm getting slow service connecting through the R7000 (20 mbs, vs the 45mbps. I was getting around 40 mbps connecting to NVG589). This happens when connecting to both the R7000 and the EX6100. I was looking at the option of connecting the R7000 in bridge mode and see if that would help. But, from my understanding if you are in bridge mode, then the R7000 does not send out WiFi (or extend the network wirelessly, the only advantage is that you can extend things through LAN (wired)) Is that correct? I need something to extend the WiFi as well throughout the house. I can also use the EX6100 but I don't think that is enough for the whole house. Any suggestions? I've also looked through the forums and saw some people mention Cascading the router, not sure what that does and even if it would help me but if anyone you fill me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!Solved305KViews0likes10CommentsRouter won't connect to internet (Comcast modem) anymore
I've had this router for a few months without any issues. But this morning all my connected computers said limited connection.. I'm still on the network but no internet available. I've tried unplugging the power on both the modem and router but the same thing happens. If I plug a computer directly to the cable modem, I access the internet fine, which leads me to believe it's a router related issue. R7000 Genie says Not Connected as well... Any ideas/suggestions?Solved293KViews0likes27CommentsRouter Keeps Rebooting
Router R7000 keeps rebooting by itself. Called netgear, replaced product twice but eventually ends up in same situation. Sometimes works for days and then all of sudden Router keeps rebooting by itself every couple of minutes or hours. Can't believe $200 router would behave this way. Had switched to $30 router and works like charm... Netgear doesn't seem to have clue, makes me repeat same troubleshooting steps from script which I have by heart now. Anyone faced with similar issue ....any resolution?Solved257KViews0likes27CommentsRouter randomly blocking websites
This is one of the stranger things that I have ever seen. My router is connected to the internet...and I can get to the internet...at least some of it. It is blocking certain websites however. Now to be clear..these are not FTP sites..or anything that I would think should cause any form of Security to block. As an example...one site is the bank where I pay my monthly house mortgage. Another is the website of a local University. I used to be able to get to both websites ...but something changed a few weeks ago. There are no blocked IP's ...or blocked anything of any kind set up in the configs. I even went to far as to add access of a PC's IP to "allow access to blocked sites" just as a test..that does not work either. I have reset more times that I care to say. I have set the router to the factory default. I have reloaded the firmware. I have looked for anything or any reason in this router as to why it might be blocking these websites and I can not find anything. I am sure some are asking if I have hard isolated it to the router. Yes I have. When my cell is on the house WIFI, it can not get to these sites. When WIFI is turned off, my cell can get to the sites fine. This is happening to anything routing through that router...both wired and wireless. I have confirmed with my ISP that they are not blocking anything. I know they are not the issue anyways because when I bypass the router and go straight to the cable modem, the websites are no longer blocked. In addition, I have used an old TP-Link router in place of this router and the sites are not blocked. For anybody wondering about Chrome, Firefox and IE... I tried all 3. I cleared the cache and cookies in all 3. As I said...this problem is hard isolated to this router. I am really hoping that somebody can offer some advice because this thing is about to go out a window. I did not pay this much money for this level of aggravation in my life. I tried to call Netgear... I got as far as the request for the Serial...where I am supposed to say "Got It". And no matter how I said it, yelled it....etc..the Netgear phone system just kept playing that stupid music and telling me to say "Got it" when ready. Honestly...if they can not manage a phone system any better than this, perhaps this is what I should expect from this router. Yes..I called at least 5 times and got the same exact experience each time.Solved250KViews2likes21CommentsHow do I reset my R7000 back to the state in which I pulled it out of the box?
How do I reset my R7000 back to the state in which I pulled it out of the box? Why am I asking? The most recent release of firmware has destroyed my router's connectivity and performance. I'm having to deal with devices that can't connect, devices that drop off, extremely poor performance, etc. It's just a disaster. I've been with Netgear 5-6 years and had to do something last night I've never had to do before - I had to revert back to a previous release of the firmware. Honestly, very little was working well. The previous release of software had a few hiccups here and there but the newest release is just a nightmare. Now that I applied a previous release of the firmware though, I still see some of the newer options that weren't there before. I took notice that the firmware was now the prior release but the GUI is still the current release. Just to give some perspective, on my Nexus 5 running 802.11ac, prior to the current release, I could peg 90Mbps+. Since the new release, the best I can do standing right next to the router is 24Mpbs+. Even after rolling back to the previous firmware, the speed is still the same. So, I want to get the router back to the shape as when I pulled it out of the box, apply the previous firmware, and reset up if necessary. I just want my router back prior the most recent release that destroyed it. Again, that release had some hiccups but it was still usable.Solved246KViews0likes11CommentsUnable to enable wireless

I bought an R7000 about a week ago now. My other router kept going wonky on me, could not take any load for any amount of time and was generally a miserable experience. Now, for my problem with the R7000: I keep having random disconnects. During this time, the internet totally cuts off. The Genie tells me my internet has disconnected. It then resumes normal operation within like 5 or maybe 8 seconds. This happens from once to three times ever hour. I tried upgrading firmware, and custom firmware. Any help for me? Thanks!Solved192KViews0likes47Comments
