Powerline
31 TopicsXAVB5201, GS105E, and VLAN's
I just wanted to post this in hopes someone else might find it useful. I had a network installation for a business in a historic old house. As such, we were not allowed to drill holes and run CAT5e without going through a long committee approval process. But at the same time I needed a way to run the cable company Internet feed from the entry point in the basement, up to the ground floor to the FVS318N firewall, and then post-firewall back downstairs to a basement office. Initially I tried doing this via 802.11gn wireless, but the floors kept interfering with the signal and causing drop outs and wildly variant connection speeds. So I purposed to employ a new & better solution (if I could) ... powerline. So I purchased 2 XAVB5201 kits (4 total units) and deployed them at each location needing network access. I also reset the factory security key on each unit. As I only needed 3 actual locations, I then deployed 3 GS105E ProSafe Plus switches. I configured the switches to have 2 VLAN's each using the Advanced 802.1Q feature; one for the raw unfiltered Internet feed, and one for the post-firewall filtered feed. It took a few notes and some restarts to get it configured just right, but the final install works flawlessly. By using the Advanced 802.1Q feature in the GS105E's I'm able to establish VLAN's and assign ports and PVID's to each of the affected ports on the switch. Also, because I configured all 3 switches to "see" both networks even if they don't participate per se I can "see" all three switches from a management workstation using the ProSafe Plus Utility AND also "see" all the powerline devices using the Netgear PowerLine Utility. An elegant solution to an in-elegant world. Post question if you wish and I'll try to answer. :)12KViews0likes2CommentsNeed the proper switch for my IPTV setup
I have the current setup: - I connect to my ISP via fiber optic cable and a provided router - For IPTV a VLAN is created by the router and assigned to a single port (LAN4) - Lan 4 is connected to a FS105 switch - Two STBs are directly connected to switch This setup works perfectly - Add a third STB connected to the switch via a POWERLINE solution (TP-LINK) The powerline shows continuous activity and playback on the STB's stutters or freezes TP-LINK states that the switch continuously sending data to the POWERLINE and thereby using up bandwidth A user on the TP-LINK forum suggested that the setup would not work if the switch did not support MULTICAST and IGMP Snooping Question 1) Does this sound correct that MULTICAST/IGMP are required to get this setup working? Question 2) If so then which NETGEAR switch would be recommended to replace the FS105?Solved8.1KViews0likes4CommentsConstant connection speed drops on 1200 powerline
I've purchased myself a 1200 powerline to connect my desktop computer to the Ethernet. This desktop computer is one floor up and maybe 20m north of the router. Not too far between the two powerline units. I've got the powerline working. I was able to run a speed test on my computer and got 9 ping, 35 up and 16 down which is more than enough, but constantly, the Ethernet speeds drop down to unbearable speeds. So bad that any speed test I try to run will time out. I've kept an eye on the LEDs built into the powerline units. The bottom LED (strength of connection between powerline devices) will constantly flip back and fourth between solid green and solid red (best connection to worst connection.) What are the things possibly affecting this connection? Would it have anything to do with my computer or is it something to do with the connection in the walls? I can't do anything as long as this problem persists. The slow connection drops skype calls, videos, games and 3 minute downloads turn into 40 hour downloads. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank youSolved7.9KViews0likes6CommentsPowerline Adapter PLP1200 shows up as "unidentified connection"
I got my first powerline because I hated the wireless life. With the new powerline, I installed and prepared it using the instructions from the manual. After hold the security button for two seconds on each adapter, the power light is flashing like it should be and once every light turns green, the computer detects it as "Unidentified Connection". Also, looking at the Network Connections section I see a new device called "Ethernet" with "Realtek PCIe GBE family controler. While connected to the adapter, I am able to access SOME websites like google, youtube etc. I'm not even connected to my wireless! But if I were to goto a website like speedtest.net (I wanted to compare speeds between wireless vs wired vs powerline wired) it takes forever to "connect" and doesn't load/ connect to the page at all.6.5KViews0likes10CommentsPowerline adapters outdoor, water proof?
Hi community, I want to place a powerline (with WIFI capability built in) just outside my house. Although there is some kind of roof above it, it will still get wet from the rain. So I would like to know if the powerline adapters from Netgear are water resistant (at least rain resistant) or not. I was mainly looking at the "PLW1000". Thank you for the info.5.1KViews0likes2CommentsWi-Fi to Metal Building with 180 Feet underground Electrical Feed
I am trying to find a Netgear Product that will extend Wi-Fi to my metal building workshop. My workshop is 180 feet from our house and powered from our main breaker panel. The power feed is 180 feet of buried plastic conduit with electrical cable. I have tried the first generation of Powerline Ethernet Wi-Fi extender which couldn't get Ethernet past the first circuit breaker it encountered. Later I purchased a second generation Powerline Ethernet Wi-Fi extender which did a good job of extending Ethernet throughout our house past multiple circuit breakers, but failed to send the signal through the 180 feet of buried electrical cable to my shop. Will the Netgear RBK50-100NAS Orbi get Wi-Fi to the workshop? Does Netgear make anything that will work in this extreme condition? Thanks for your helpSolved4.9KViews0likes1CommentIncorrect Device Password
I'm trying to add a XAV2001 adapter to my existing Powerline network. However, I cannot configure the encryption key using the PC utility because the 'device password' is incorrect. Yes, the one printed on the back of the device. I've typed it 10-12 times in caps, lowercase, with hyphens, w/o hyphens, etc. None work. Is there some trick to how the PW is entered in to the utility? Is it possible that it was printed incorrectly? Any help much appreciated.4.7KViews0likes5CommentsEX6150 as a wfi extender with powerline extenders
I have an EX6150 already and want to add powerline extenders to my network. I noticed in the powerline +WIFI option, the WIFI extender looks nearly identical to the EX6150. So my question is this, if I set up a powerline extension, will the 6150 pick that up thru the electirical outlet and broadcast an extended WiFi signal (and the cable port as well), or would I need to purchase the powerline +WIFI set instead? Thanks Dave4.2KViews0likes3Comments
