I naively bought a WD My Book Essential 3TB USB 3.0 (USB 2.0 compatible) for use as a backup drive for my NV+ v2 (with 3 x 3TB WD drives inside), having used a number of different USB 2.0 drives in the past successfully (2 x Samsung 1.5TB Story Stations, Buffalo 2.0 TB Just Store Desktop). Unfortunately the NV+ refuses to recognise the WD drive, either in the USB 3.0 ports or the front USB 2.0 port. The WD is formatted as NTFS, as were the other drives I have used. I am currently using the WD drive as a backup via my iMac (connected using Gigabit Ethernet to the NAS), but it would be more convenient to use it directly with the NAS. Has anyone successfully used this mainstream drive with an NV+ v2? Has anyone got any suggestions?Readynas 4200 and 3TB on USB cradle only 746/801 GB...HELP
Hello... I have a 4200 here that i need to run with a USB attached 3tb Seagate drive... It shows me 746 gb availalabe and i am able to format that as well... But i can't get it to see the full size... smartctl sees the whole cpacity, but fdisk is not able to get it... I guess it has something todo with the early version of fdisk that does not know GPT... But somehow it must be possible... OS is newest version x.30 and i tried to load parted over ssh but it wont work... Any one did this before?! THX!!!!Disabling power management on WD My Passport USB HDD
I've read a number of posts that discouraged the use of Western Digital external USB HDDs because their power management functionality would interfere with backup or other time-intensive file transfers. I haven't found many posts updating this finding to reflect the current situation with such drives, so wanted to report that I just purchased a WD My Passport 1 TB external USB HDD, and was able to easily disable power management using the included "WD Drive Utilities" (which I installed on my Windows machine) by selecting "Never" for the Sleep Timer. I was then able to successfully backup my entire ReadyNAS Duo to this USB drive.External storage issue
I have an R6400 router (latest firmware: V1.0.1.24), and want to connect a Seagate Backup Plus 4TB external drive to serve as back up for several computers in the house. Prior to connecting it to the router I connected it directly to my MacBook Air (running OS X.12.6)--and was coached to download drivers so I could use TimeMachine. I then copied some files onto it (not with TimeMachine). When I connected it to the router, it mounts and is recognized as USB Storage--but it doesn't show the files and reports 0 bytes. I take it this is because the drive now has "special drivers" and so won't work with the router? Is there anything I can do about this--e.g. remove the drivers (and I guess live without TimeMachine). Or am I stuck with a drive I can't use on my network? Thanks for any advice you can give me.SolvedBackup of RN516 to External HDD EXT4 or NTFS
My readynas 516 has NFS enabled as all my files are large 5-35GB movie files when configuring the backup in NAS frontview the suggested format is EXT4 will this not cause a problem if i ever need to restore my Nas from that backup. Or perhaps am i getting confused here with NTFS I am cofusing services with file systems having said all that still is EXT4 the best format for the backup drive I Was going to use WD My Book Duo 16TB for the jobSolvedUSB Storage share names changes all the time
Hi, I have a 4TB disk with three partitions attached to my R7000 (latest firmware V1.0.4.30_1.1.67). Very often the share names get mixed up, sometimes two partitons have the same share name. I have not figured out what the exact pattern of this behaviour is. Rebooting did not help. This is very annoying and I can't get OSX Time Machine to reliably use always the correct partition. Any ideas?
Hi Everyone, I recently purchased a new ReadyNAS 314 running OS 6.2.0. Everything has worked great with only one technical problem. I'm using an old external Iomega RAID enclosure for as a backup device, and it does not show up on my admin page. It is formated to ext4 and runs on USB 2.0. I plugged it into the front shared USB 2.0/eSata port and no result. I tried using the rear USB 3.0 ports with no success. The odd thing is that I'm using a very old USB 2.0 stick in the lower rear port to hold my encryption key, and it works just fine. I tested the front port with a newer thumb drive and it showed up with no problems. The old Iomega RAID enclosure works great with all my other systems. So, there is no obvious problem with the old enclosure. This should work, but it doesn't. What am I forgetting? Here is my log file from usb_drives: 1-0:1.0 1-1 idProduct=1000 idVendor=090c devnum=2 speed=480 1-1:1.0 1-3 idProduct=027f idVendor=059b devnum=4 speed=480 1-3:1.0 2-0:1.0 3-0:1.0 4-0:1.0 4-1 idProduct=0002 idVendor=051d devnum=10 speed=1.5 4-1:1.0 4-2 idProduct=0008 idVendor=08ec devnum=3 speed=480 4-2:1.0 5-0:1.0 My RN314 is running on a RAID 10 configuration with encryption and anti-virus both activated. My Iomega is configured to RAID 0 with no encryption. I'm adverse to updating the firmware on the 314 without any backup system. And, I'd like to avoid buying a new external enclosure if possible. Thanks for any suggestions.Solved
