Using with Mac OSX
1031 TopicsCatalina, Time Machine, and my ReadyNAS
I thought I'd share my recent experience with Time Machine and my ReadyNAS 314. I finally took the plunge, and upgraded my Mac from Mojave to Catalina. Suprisingly, the upgrade went off without incident, except that Time Machine stopped working. I was getting various errors, such as "Remote disk not available", etc. I noticed that the upgrade changed the name of the backup on the ReadyNAS from <mybackup>.sparsebundle to <mybackup>.backupbundle. After reviewing some online disucssions of other users, I tried de-selecting ReadyNAS as the destination for my TM backup, then selecting it again. This appeared at first to fix the problem. The backups started running again, but then would fail. I gave up after several attempts to salvage the existing backup. Fortunately, Time Machine is not my only backup strategy. My first thought was to force TM to create a new backup. So I used a trick that has worked in the past. I edited the file com.apple.TimeMachine.MachineID.plist, changing the key VerifcationState from "1" to "2". (I made a backup copy of this file before I edited it!) A value of 2 tells TM that a verification has failed. At first, this appeared to work. TM reported that it needed to begin a new backup. However, it ran for about twenty minutes, then died. Here's what I finally did: Used SSH to access the directory on the NAS (default /data/.timemachine/ReadyNAS Used the command rm -rf *.sparsebundle which forced the recursive deletion of all files/folders without any warnings or prompts Deselected/reselected the ReadyNAS (on my system, the volume is called timemachine) Let Time Machine begin a new backup. The initial backup, as expected, took several hours. However, subsequent backups have run very quickly, and without errors. I hope this information might be useful to other users who have (or are planning to) upgrade(d) from an earlier version of Mac OS-X to Catalina.5.3KViews2likes16CommentsUpdated firmware for my readyNAS RN10400
It's been booting ever since I updated the firmware. Found this answer looking through the forums: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS/After-update-firmware-6-4-0-RN10400-doesnt-boot/m-p/990980#M94937 Followed the links and it says the USB fix is only for PC users. What can I do if I'm a Mac user? I don't understand how updating the firmware has messed it up like this. Any help would be amazing. -Justin-2.7KViews1like5CommentsFile Permissions on Downloads. Can't move, rename or delete files.
Hi Guys This is not really a question but an answer to a question I asked on the old forum a couple of times without resolution. Despite setting everything as I thought it should be and leaving most things as defaults I consistently had an issue with downloaded files having permissions set so that I couldn't move them, rename them etc.. It might be that it was something specific to my set up but I had the same issue on a Duo v1 and then on a Duo v2. For background, I use a service called Showsrss.info to send magnet files for shows I subscribed to directly to a Transmission Add-on running on my ReadyNAS. This works beautifully and the files download onto the Media share on my ReadyNAS before the wonderful utility Hazel moves them and renames them for me. However, Hazel was being stumped because I didn't have proper permissions to move the files. I couldn't work out how to fix this and asked for help here. No-one else had an answer either so I just continued on using the "Reset Permissions" button on the shares tab of the ReadyNAS web interface manually. I continued doing this until my Web Interface locked up and I was stumped. I followed advice found here and contacted NetGear tech support. I booted the ReadyNAS into Tech Support Mode and supplied the Telnet number to tech support. In the end they didn't have to do anything because rebooting into normal mode seems to have fixed the problem. However, I decided that, as the downloading and streaming seemed to continue working even when I couldn't access the web interface to reset permissions, I should seek a solution to the permissions problem. Netgear tech support suggested asking the author of the Add-On for advice and I did. The wonderful Stefan supplied the following advice which has worked beautifully: 1) Set the permission flags in Transmission so that Hazel can access and move the files, no matter what user initially wrote them to the disk. To do this, stop the Transmission add-on, then click on the “Edit settings.json” button. In the text window scroll down until you find the “umask” entry. Change from 18 (default) to 0. Save the file and restart transmission. 2) Make sure that files and folders within the share Transmission saves the downloads to are owned by “admin/admin” instead of the “nobody/nogroup” default. Make sure that “Automatic Permissions” is checked and to “Reset Permissions” after this change. Of course you can use both methods in parallel. I hope this helps anyone else who has had a similar question or who finds themselves struggling with this in the future. Cheers, Grouty3.6KViews1like1CommentTime Machine can’t access the backup disk
ReadyNAS RN10221D-100NAS MAC OS: 10.7.5 using time machine for my backups sharing ReadyNAS with two macs. One on wifi and the other directly connected by ethenet to my router. I bought this ReadyNAS as it was suppose to work with MAC OS and with Time Machine. It was not easy to install and setup and every couple of months I have had issues. Now I cant get Time Machine to connect to my ReadyNAS. I have attached a old backup HD I had and Time Machine finds it and starts a back up. With the ReadyNAS I receive the following error message: Time Machine can’t access the backup disk “timemachine”. The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error 57 and also 89.) I tried my wifes MacBook and it does the same. I attach the old HD and it connects and backsup. So it is NOT the Mac or time machine it is the ReadyNAS. I am technical enough to solve simple problems but not enough to go beyond this. Anyone can help a less than technical person?8.1KViews1like4CommentsBackup and Sync
I have just set up my ReadyNas, and hope that the following might be useful. Essentially I had no trouble setting up TimeMachine, but ReadyCloud installation; Backup and Sync all caused me problems. My environment is iMac, Yosemite 10.3.3 ReadyCloud App (i.e. for OSX). Don't be surprised if you don't get a prompt to install (which the Netgear feature video suggests). That means you have to go and find it. I strongly suggest raising it as an email issue at this point (NOT live chat), to ensure that you get the latest version. The versions I was sent to during Live Chat would not install. I was also told that I should uninstall ReadyNAS Remote prior to installing. The emailed link from support and the uninstall of ReadyNAS remote worked. Backup and Sync seem to work, but in a rather arcane way. As far as I can tell you need to Backup a folder before you can Sync, but there is rather more to it than that. Backup. You can choose any folder you like to back up from the home user directory - the one with a house icon and your name. I recommend creating a new folder in there, and putting a single file in there too. I used a Word file. In ReadyCloud (the app) Choose Backup Mac Folder. This worked for me, but creates a folder on the NAS called xxxxxx-imac-lan-Test_backup (xxxetc for security reasons. My original folder on the Mac was called simply Test backup. The backup worked fine. I could not see how to get the file back onto the Mac, but eventually worked out that I had to stop the backup, and do a Sync. Sync. Again, it works, but some tenacity helps! Running Sync puts the file back on the Mac, but not in the folder you started with! You get a directory in your home user folder called ReadyCloud, and below that you have the folder you backed up written back - yes, with the strange created name. Kind of obscure, and if you wanted this to work long-term you would then have to delete your original I guess, because you now have multiple versions, one of which (your original) isn't going anywhere, unless of course you do a backup). Editing the file locally (i.e. getting it from where ReadyCloud wrote it back to) saving and closing it results in an updated version on the NAS, automatically. My next problem came when editing the file through the ReadyCloud portal (browser, not App, I haven't tried the Remote or mobile Apps yet). I edited, saved and closed, and there was no syncing. Eventually I worked out that nor only was I not syncing, I wasn't actually saving my edits. They were being saved in Downloads for some reason (probably because I opened the doc on the web - not sure). I did a Save As, found the right place, and all worked - make sure you overwrite though, or it will save with a numbered version e.g. Test file n. Having done Save As once I think it worked with a Save the next time. So, it does sync, and bidirectionally, but perhaps not very practically. As I mentioned above you would have to Backup the relevant folders from your home user folder. That original folder is then rendered obsolete, because the Sync is not using it.5.7KViews1like3CommentsSpotlight
Sorry for asking a silly question. But does spotlight not work on the readynas? I had an NV+ and now have a new 516. On both of them I've enabled indexing on the volume using mdutil and always thought it was working. I never really had a reason to think it wasn't until I went here and saw people talking about needing to have spotlight support compiled into nettalk. So does spotlight work or not work? I use AFP to connect to all my shares on both the NV+ and the 516.2.5KViews1like1CommentTime Machine "disk not available" (RN104, firmware 6.10.2)
I've been running macOS Catalina on my 2018 Mac mini since it was released, and my RN104 is on 6.10.2 Everything was fine and then I turned both Mac and NAS off while I was on vacation; since turning them back on*, I've been getting errors from Time Machine saying "Backup Disk Not Available; Try backing up again when RN104.local is available". (*I wonder if the update to 6.10.2 happened when I rebooted, in which case it may be related to the problem - I don't recall when it updated.) I've tested pointing Time Machine at my old NV+ and that works fine, so that (in my mind) points the finger squarely at the RN104. I've turned off Shared Time Machine (on RN104), rebooted, re-enabled it, and I get the same error. I've set up a Private Time Machine and get the same error. (Incidentally, I am able to mount the shares from RN104 without any issue.) I thought I would see if the Time Machine sparsebundle is visible on the network but I can't find it - I can, however, see the one on the NV+ This leads me to think that the RN104 isn't actually setting up for Time Machine correctly. Any suggestions on what to check/try next?Solved3.2KViews1like7CommentsHow to locate TimeMachine backup ReadyNas
Hi I have succesfully made a backup form my Mac (MacOS Mojave) to my ReadyNas 516 (firmware 6.9.5) using TimeMachine. In Finder I can reach al the folders and data (mounted the share with admin credentials). Howeever I can't find the TimeMachine data from my Mac. Via the webinterface, logged on with the admin credentials, I also don't find a TimeMachine back-up. Is this a hidden folder? How can I make this data visible on my Mac and webinterface? Thanks for the help!3.8KViews1like3CommentsIssue with Unicode (non-English) folder and file names (ReadyNAS 214, Firmware v6.9.0)
I have a ReadyNAS 214 with 4 drives installed. It's running Firmware v6.9.0, and I'm using it in a macOS environment. The shares are setup as SMB3. I recently discovered that there appears to be an issue with Unicode (international) characters in file/folder names. One of my shares has 70+ folders, but less than half of them were showing up on my SMB clients. I spent a good amount of time fiddling with permissions, etc., before I noticed that the folders that weren't showing up on the clients were the ones following (and including) a particular folder with an accented character in its name. I renamed that folder to get rid of the accented character, then all folders were properly displayed. The User's Guide simply says "ReadyNAS OS 6 supports unicode." Then it goes on to say "We recommend selecting a language based on the region in which you use the ReadyNAS." So apparently the issue is not that I had a Unicode character in the folder name, but that the character didn't match the language I have selected in the system configuration. This is an absolutely ridiculous limitation - just because I speak English doesn't mean I don't have files with names using other languages. This MUST be fixed, and I will file it as a bug report with Netgear support. I just wanted to share this in case anyone else ran into this problem (I can't imagine that nobody has!)1KViews1like0Comments
