Can't change icons of attached devices

Have most updated firmware.

I click on attached devices and then click on say a HP printer and I change the icon to printer.  Says updating, but right back to standard icon.

Any suggestions?

Is this on the web interface "Attached Devices" page, or on the Orbi "app"?  On the web interface, when I click on "Apply", the icon changes.

    (on my RBR50).

Thanks for confirming.  How about this: on the Attached Devices page, when you click on a device and it brings up the page with boxes for:

             Device Model

             Device Name

             Device Type

If you change one of these, say "Device Model" and click on "Apply", does it change?  (Hint: I just add one letter to the end, like an "X".  Makes it easy to change it back.)

If you change "Device Name",and click on "Apply", does that change take?

So, finally, changing "Device Type" to one of the other choices, and clicking on "Apply", that is the only thing that doesn't work?

Mostly, we get complaints that Netgear does not offer enough options for Device Type (I have made a formal request on the "Ideas" page).

        This is a "new one".

  • I have no idea what this means.

  • Many thanks to this thread.  I too was plagued by the problem of not being able to change the manufacturer name and icon for my connected devices.   So after telneting into the router, I discovered that it was only assigning a name to each device and not creating a "orbi_dev_name_ntgrxx" associated with it.   And of course I didn't want to do a full reset and lose everything I'd already configured.   So I added them all manually and now they can be changed via the GUI.    During this process I discovered a couple new icons (42 & 43) and below is the complete table:

    Device Icon List
    0 Orbi Satellite
    1 Amazon Kindle

    2 Android Device
    3 Android Phone
    4 Android Tablet

    5 Apple Airport

    7 Bridge
    8 Cable STB

    9 Camera

    10 Router
    11 DVR
    12 Gaming Console
    13 iMac
    14 iPad

    15 iPad Mini

    16 iPhone 5

    17 iPhone

    18 iPod Touch
    19 Linux PC
    20 Mac Mini

    21 Mac Pro

    22 MacBook

    23 Media Device

    24 Network Device

  • I can comfirm this issue on my RBR20.  Changing the Device Type icon used to work until the most recent firmware update.  All the device types I set prior to the latest update are still there, I just can't change one.  I can however change the device name, just not the type.  It's stuck on Network Device.

Can you please try to change the device type to something different than what it was before the upgrade, save it, then change it again to what it was before the upgrade!

So if you have an iPhone then change it first to say Bridge, save it, then change it again back to iPhone, will this work?

No, this does not work.  It does not work because the firmware is ignoring any attempt to change the device type of any device.  The type information is not being persisted.

  • Same here. This is after the latest firmware upgrade. The bad thing is that support simply does not reply to my request, even when I remind them. I have not found the solution, also in the webbrowser will the system replace the icon back to the old setting. Very annoying this.
  • I have an Orbi RBR50 with 2 satellites. Since the last firmware update, the device names and descriptions were all changed...ALL of them. One of my Rokus became a camera. I tediously changed ALL of them. No easy task. I had to go to each device to get the IP address and MAC numbers. Unfortunately, the device descriptions changed again on refresh or closing and opening the app or screen. This occurred with the Android app and the online address. I have given up. A total waste of time. Thank goodness I have a massive amount of security redundancy, otherwise it might be impossible to monitor! I am also noticing another change. When rebooting the router, the satellites won't connect. The satellites stayed solid blue for over 10 minutes. It's quite a process now to get the satellites synced up after reboot. NETGEAR, please fix V2.5.0.38 update.

I found this thread through an internet search because like a lot of you I too could not change the icon on some of the devices on my list of attached devices. Through trial and error I found I could change *some* of the icons, the ones at the top of the list. Having a bit of a web app/database background I suspected some kind of issue with the database, so I worked my way down until I found a particularly long device name. Everything after that entry exhibited the error condition (icon changes would not be saved).

So I shortened the device name and saved it, then tested the items that previously could not be changed. Voila! Fixed.

What I suspect here is some sort of back end change to the data storage structure that was not reflected in the web interface, resulting in unchecked input validation causing a database issue (most likely exceeding the allowable characters in a field).

TL/DR: Look for long names in your list of devices. If you can change the icons before that one but not after it in the list, shorten the name.

Do you mind sharing how long the suspect device name was?

I believe this was it (fortunately I'd saved a spreadsheet with all the info prior to wiping out the name):

        LSD Science and Technology Co.

So looks like 29 characters. Could also be a function of the whitespace and period, or some other character that I'm too bothered to figure out. Once I shortened that to "LSD Science" I was able to modify and save icons farther down the list.
