Can a managed switch be used as unmanaged?

I saw a solution for this question by Laurent Masia but I may be missing some relevant info to make the endpoints talk to the 'main' switch.

The latest firmware was downloaded on XS708T and no further configuration was done (except setting up a static IP).

1) Currently plugged in TP-Link TL-SX1008 (unmanaged switch in the office) to the wall socket (10G RJ45) --> Mikrotik CRS312-4C+8XG-RM (managed switch located in the attic). Connection ok with expected speeds 10g speeds for endpoints (PCs, servers, etc).

Mikrotik CRS312 --> TP-Link TL-SX1008 --> PC/Laptop --> Connection ok (10Gig/2.5 Gig respectively)

2) If Netgear XS708T is connected (managed switch) to Mikrotik CRS312-4C+8XG-RM (managed switch) there is no connection established. No IP given.

Mikrotik CRS312 --> Netgear XS708T --> PC/Laptop --> No Connection (169.x.x.x)

If XS708T is unmanaged out of the box, what can cause this lack of connectivity?

  • The default config of these switches is all in a single VLAN (technically #1), however the orts are configured to be associated with VLAN 1, PVID 1 - so the basic L2 behavior is very similar to an unmanaged switch.

    Figure out on how the  CRS312-4C+8XG-RM ports are configured.

      Turns out the Netgear managed switch XS708T  was not able to retrieve an IP address from Mikrotik after several factory resets and attempts at configuration with support.

      RMA has been issued and a new managed switch will be tested:  XS712Tv2.
