Cannot ping Router WAN port from NetGear Switch
Hi, Everyone, I have a managed NetGear Switch M4350. The set up is easy, as follows.
Host PC 10.10.10.9, there is only one VLAN on switch (10.10.10.1), and every port is its member.
Router is a random consumer router with WAN port set with static ip 10.10.10.102, and it has port forwarding to a LAN device. The router allows ping on the WAN port.
However, I could still not ping 10.10.10.102 with the NetGear Switch.
I tried:
- ping WAN port of the router from PC with PC directly connected to the router -> works
- ping another static IP static 10.10.10.103 from switch -> works
- swap the switch with an unmanaged switch and ping 10.10.10.102 from PC -> works
- change the router to another model, do the same configuration -> ping doesn't work
So for me it really feels like the combination of the router WAN port and managed switch makes pinging not work. Can someone shed some light on this?
Thanks in advance!
Found out the reason, why it's not working. The SFP module on the switch doesn't support 100mb ethernet, and the router wan port only goes up to 100mb

Have you checked the router security settings to see if that is the case here?
Hi, Stephen, thanks for the reply, yeah, I have enabled the WAN port ping on the routers and I can actually ping it, if I have a pc directly connected to the router
