can you set device based parental controls?
Hi,
I have a WNDR3800 router. I am trying to make use of the Parental Controls, which only seem to work for the whole router. ie: I am trying to modify per device settings to configure different Parental Rules, eg: none for my PC, and Medium for the kids ipads and PC. From Network Map I can open up a device, click modify to change the Parental Control setting for that device, Click Apply to "save" it, but it never saves and goes straight back to showing "default level on router".
The documentation says you can change per device, but it's not working. Should it, or is there a bug here? I'm using the latest Netgear firmware available.
I have tried configuring this from a PC & Mac, same problem.

Thanks
Tim

Hi Tsteele23,
You have followed the correct steps in completing the setup that you want. I recommend performing a firmware re-flash then reset and reconfigure the router. You may refer to the links below for the steps:

Once you have successfully reconfigured the router, please try uninstalling and re-installing the NETGEAR Genie applications on all devices and check if it works.

Dexter,
I've reflashed and reconfigured, and still stuck with the same problems. Trying to changing the level of parental control per device is not saving.
I installed the Genie app on my tablet, and it gives me an error after clicking Apply : "Failed to set Parental Controls Filtering"
Any ideas?

Hi Tsteele23,
I will need the following information for me to provide you with a better recommendation:
1. May I know what is the firmware version of the router?
2. Are you getting the same error on all devices?
3. Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing the app on the devices?

This has not been solved. I have a C7000 and can not set parental control by device. I followed this thread but it doesn't solve the device specific content filtering. Please help!!!

Same problem here WNDR3700v5 - 1.1.0.32

I have exactly the same issue on an older wndr3700. will this be getting new firmware, or do I buy a new router to access these new features?
I've tried with Windows 10 PC which indicated no errors and Android app. "Failed to set parental controls", but both always revert to default, so obviously device isn't capable.

Hi @jlowe73,
1. Are all devices affected?
2. Have you tried re-flashing the latest firmware then resetting and reconfiguring the router? If not, you may refer to the links below for the steps.

Thanks Dexter,
Are you saying that the WNDR3700v2 DOES SUPPORT individual device settings?
Because, if it does, I will try reflashing the firmware (although I think it is a few years since the firmware release was updated, and I already have this version anyway.)
If it doesn't support it, then re-flashing won't change anything and I think I will have to buy a newer router?
Thanks,
Justin.
- 720347AspirantI've been having the same problem as everyone else with a D3600. I've tried rolling back, rolling forwards access from Windows and Android genie apps to no avail. It's been a total waste of time and the router is being returned. I personally feel misled because the box the router came in mentions that it's compatible with the genie app and supports parental controls on a per device basis. The app apparently exposes controls and features that are not hosted on the router which is also misleading.

Hi @Joe2386,
The firmware version of your router indicates that it is an ISP supplied device which means that there are modifications made by the ISP. Some features of the device may end up not working.

Hi all,
i have the same problem with my wndr4300, new firmware and genie application.
You have to do the following:
The router firmware is not able to authentificate in that menu to opendns and therefor the router can not receive your decided live parental control settings from that site.
Workaround:
You first have to login to opendns and create bypass accounts for all your network devices you wish to configurate with different LPC settings (as router default).
Then you have to install the genie application at all of these clients and login to genie and life parental control menu with your opendens account. Then choose/authentificate the created bypass account.
Then you can disable, with the taskbar icon of genie, to start genie when windows comes up or even you can uninstall genie at these clients.
The depended information stays at the routers ROM, even you restart your router, but not when you reset it.
Tip:
If you change at opendns.com your filters of the bypass accounts, you have to wait 5 minutes and then the filter is operative at the client, without reboot of the client or router
