Spotify intermittent drops

Running an Orbi RBR852 with an extra satellite.  From time to time Spotify with drop the connection on my TV after installing.  I did not have this issue when running my ISPs router (2.4 and 5 disabled now) and do not have this issue when running other web services (e.g., Netflix, Disney+).  I have CenturyLink fiber and test at 930 or so up/ down at the Orbi and 350-450 wirelessly on my Mac and iPhone.

The TV looks to be connected to the 5ghz signal on the RBR and there is an RBS on the upper level also.  I was originally thinking the TV was switching between the RBR and RBS but accoring to the app that is not the case.

I ran a Wifi scan on my Mac and changed 2.4 to channel 11 and 5 to channel 36 per its recommendation.

Anyone else having this issue?

Ended up hard wiring the TV.
Would be great if you could break out the 2.4 and 5ghz frequencies if you wanted to or force a device to a specific frequency.

There is already a toggle to turn internet on and off at the device level. Seems like adding a toggle or option for 2.4, 5, or both at a device level should be doable.

  • What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem the NG router is connected too?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected. https://kb.netgear.com/000036466/How-far-should-I-place-my-Orbi-satellite-from-my-Orbi-router

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Try disabling the following and see:
A IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Set Short preamble instead of Long preamble modes. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

Be sure that CTS and RTS values are changed to 2347 under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

      Firmware: V3.2.10.11_1.2.12

      ISP Modem: Zyxel C3000Z

      Home sq ft: ~6,500

Distance to satellites: ~35 ft to RBS upper level; ~25 ft to RBS lower level; RBR on main level

      Channels: 2.4ghz - 11; 5ghz - 36 (based on a Wifi scan using my Mac utility)

3-4 Wifi neighbors, however, the closet house is ~50-75 ft away

I see a checkbox to enable 20/40mhz coexistence but not one to default to 40mhz only unless by unchecking the checkbox it defaults to 40mhz.

Preamble is set to automatic, assume it should be fixed at short for both 2.4 and 5ghz?

RTS/ CTS set to 500.  I tried 2347 previously and the wireless speed dropped significantly.

If the speed at 2347 is significant lower than at 500 this might mean that you have a lot of wireless interference and transmission errors...

  • What mode is the modem working in? Modem only or router mode. That modem has a built in router and wifi. Just disabling the radios on the modem won't help with NAT issues. This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
    https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
    Couple of options,
    1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
    2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
    3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

Also if your other apps and services are working and only Spotify isn't, possible app issue here or something with the TV isn't working right.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I can set the modem to transparent bridge but going to try the DMZ/ Exposed host route first as it's easiest and I do not have to deal with CenturyLink tech support on a Sunday...

Thought the issue could be with Spotify, however, when hooked up to the CenturyLink modem/ router WIFI I do not have this issue.  I assume it has something to do with the RBR/ RBS, device switching between points, switching between 2.4 and 5 ghz, and perhaps how much the Spotify service buffers.

        Possible behavior with the service...

Try AP mode on the Orbi AX as well.
