6 G to Satellite is slow

I ran a speedtest of my Orbi97 in the interface and it is showing 66mbps download speed.  My laptop has a 6G connection to a satellite with a strong signal, and while it normally gets pretty good speed, it will often drop to like 5mpbs download (upload is about 10 which is what my provider gives me). There aren't that many devices demanding the bandwidth.   Other devices are using 2.4g and 5 g., but mostly 2.4

Any ideas on why this might happen and what settings I might use to prevent this slowdown?

The M4 can have 6E disabled - System Settings/WiFi/Details button, toggle WiFi 6E modem OFF. It will in certain cases toggle it back on, so verify it when/if you are testing. But if the Mac is stationary (not moving around the house), not rebooting or updating, you are pretty safe that will stay on the 5GHz band.

The MacBook Pro M4 WiFi is 6E (802.11ax), which does support 6Ghz connections.  However 6GHz is much more sensitive to distance and building material than 5GHz.

    (showing ignorance here.....)

On many Windows systems, there is an option in the WiFi settings to enable/disable each of the wireless bands.  If the MacBook has a similar feature, it might be worth experimenting by disabling 6GHz and observing if the speed changes.

thank you  I have turned off 6 g on my laptop.   I wonder if I have a bad satellite.  It kept disconnecting from the router and now, even thought it is on the same floor with only 1 wall between it and the hub, it says the connection is poor:

So details as others have said.

    1. what actual router do you have?
    2. what firmware is on it?
    3. what modem/gateway is it connected to?
    4. Does the speed drop only happen when connected to the satellite?
    5. how far from the router is the satellite and what materials are in the way? (type of wall materials, appliances, floors, etc)
    6. Is it only the 6ghz on the satellite that has the lower speed.

The more you can tell us, the more we can help

      Guide

Hi Folks,  Thank you for your help. More information:

      Orbi 770 Series Tri-Band WiFi 7 Mesh System, 11Gbps, 3-Pack (RBE773)
      Firmware Version
      V10.5.20.7_2.2.48

It connects to an RF antenna that connects to a tower with Spectrum broadband.

The speed drop seems to happen only when connected to the satellite and when it is 6ghz mode, but my Apple MacBook Pro M4 makes this automatic.   The Satellite is above me on the second floor about 20 feet away. So 1 floor and 1 wall separate us. However, this never used to be a problem for my older Mac Laptop....  Theoretically, the 6 G should be faster.     Don't know if I can force it to connect to the main router.

      Any suggestions appreciated.

In addition to getting the actual product number, it would be useful to know what speeds you are seeing when you connect the laptop over ethernet.

Ideally make this test with the laptop connected to the router ethernet, and again when connected to the satellite ethernet port.

ORBI97 sounds like a default WiFi SSID ("name" printed on the product label).  It would be helpful to know the actual product number. (also from the label)
