RBE770 & RBE771 - satellite stops providing connection

I have the RBE770 Router with one RBE771 satellite (placed around 30 feet away, up one floor) in a standard 4-bed house.

Regularly (sometimes multiple times per day) the satellite simply stops working and devices default to connecting back to the router (if they can reach). The satellite is still powered on but seems to not be giving/receiving signals - confirmed by using WiFi Explorer on multiple computers which show the connections to that satellite have just disappeared.

The strength of connection to the router from where the satellite is positioned is around 50%-60% so should be more than enough to retain connection...?

I've tried resetting everything back to factory settings and starting from scratch, but that has not helped. Every time this happens I have to unplug the satellite, and turn back on. The connection then re-establishes for a while until the next drop off (which could be an hour or a few days).

My router is wired straight into the wall (there's no modem in my setup). My internet speed to the house is around 900MB. I'm running firmware V10.5.13.1 on both devices and have had the problem since purchase, a few months ago.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received!!

  • A couple things to try.

    1. move the satellite. Even though you stated those strength testings, things in walls, metal appliances, or other devices could cause interference. Sometimes a lateral move can help just as much as moving closer to get objects out of blocking the signal.

    2. is the 240hz backhaul MLO enabled? (under advanced settings/wireless settings through the browser).

    3. when it drops, what does the status page show under the orbi through the GUI for the satellite?

      Hi plemans

      1) I moved the satellite downstairs following your suggestion. The internet was fine for a week but now the same issue has occurred.

      2) I've just enabled 200hz backhaul MLO. So will see if that helps.

      3) Looking on the app, the Satellite shows as online with green bars, so it thinks it is still working.

      Thanks

  • I’m having the same problem, only it’s my router’s radios that fail and everything connects to my satellite. I still maintain connectivity since mine are wired.

This tends to happen about once per week for me. I’d contact support. It’s been frustrating, but I think they finally at least understand what the problem is. I’m currently waiting for it to happen again to gather some logs for them.

I have similar issue. RBE771 router with 2 RBE770 satellites. 3 floor house, 1 device on each floor, 1 satellite is wired the other is wireless. It all works fine for some number of days then one day the wireless satellite is no longer connected to the router. No  coloured lights, nothing so it looks fine. Also , I can access both satellites admin page which look normal but the router shows it has lost connection to the satellite and no devices are connected to that satellite. Firmware is latest available. If I reboot it all goes working again and then this all repeats after x days. I have owned many Netgear Orbi models since the early days and this is the only one that acts this way and I am very disappointed given its extremely high price.

Agreed doesn't make sense. No devices are showing connected to that satellite and yet the admin is still reachable and it shows as connected. The attached devices page of the router shows it as disconnected.

Just curious, have you swapped RBS with each other to see if the problem is only seen at the wireless connected RBS location?

What is the distance between the RBR and this wireless RBS location?

What devices do you have connected to this RBS?

  • There seem to be different issues reported in this thread and they probably have different root causes.  SuperTG - Your issue, where your Orbi satellites lose clients within a day or two so they connect to the router, is the same as what I reported for my Orbi RBE870.  Netgear support is working with me (case 48920368) and gave me a beta firmware that seems to fix it.  I'm still running this beta FW per their direction, not the recent 10.5.18.3 release, so I don't know if that latest FW contains my fix.

I know it's slow and frustrating to work with Netgear support and have avoided it myself, but giving them debug logs seems a better strategy than just hoping for a new FW to fix our unique issues.  The vast variation in our home network environment is presumably why we have distinct problems not seen by the majority of Orbi owners.  Not all "satellite disconnected" issues are the same.

      Summary of my issues

      1. 2 Satellites, 1 wireless and 1 wired, lose backhaul connection to the router at random number of days. Usually just the wireless but has also been both.

      2. Router incorrectly reports which satellite a given device is connected to. Wireless satellite shows a device connected to it and the router shows that same device as wired to the router. Many cases of this. Satellite shows 8 devices connected and router shows 3 connected to that satellite.

      3. Debug capture doesn't work after x days. I set it to capture (as instructed by support) until I notice a satellite is disconnected. When it happens I go to debug page and capture has been turned off by itself.

      4. Satellites (every time the wireless and often also the wired) do not reconnect to the router after a router reboot. Usually 1-2 power cycles of the satellite to make it connect. Oddly, when this happens and the router shows satellite as disconnected I can still get to the satellite admin page by ip address.

I have owned almost every Orbi model since Orbi started and no other model over many years has acted as consistently badly as this extremely expensive model. Been in the same house all that time.

I tried reproducing this on my 770 series before going to my 870 series. Could not reproduce this RBS issue or any issue related to the RBS. Wireless and wired RBS. Watched TV and streamed thru the RBS and gamed thru the RBS. Problem never presented it self, or days later and currently not seeing any issues on the 870 series with it's RBS wireless connected after putting it in place on 3/31.

Wondering if environment or something specific with maybe some connecting devices or maybe a total amount of devices could be a cause of this bad RBS behavior being seen.
