RAX40 dropping signal

Anyone else experiencing signal loss randomly with latest firmware?

ISP is good, router works fine after reboot, but it's almost daily and sometimes twice a day.

Running Firmware V1.0.3.80_1.0.1

I ended up swapping for an ASUS AX3000. This being the final straw, I have had multiple issues over the last year and change from SmartConnect not working at all to spontaneous reboots. I couldn’t go much more than a week without some sort of issue.

Just rebooted twice within a hour WiFi dropped out again

  • I went back to software 1.0.3.64 as others suggested it sovles wifi drop outs

Mine was even worse wifi dropping out lan ports dropping out

So only solution was to upgrade back to 1.0.3.80

Since putting this back on had no wifi drop outs or lan port drop outs so fingers crossed this has worked

OK after weeks and numerous follow ups to my L2 support representative, they finally have another beta for me to test.. RAX40-V1.0.3.83_1.0.10 dated 4th November 2020

I'll be testing and monitoring over the course of the week and will report back my findings and experience with the update.

Thanks pal keep us updated with your findings

  • Just flashed the 1.03.88 firmware. Still seeing drops on 5ghz wifi network, at least twice in the last 30mins.
Haven't factory reset yet, might try that.

wow, seriously?? looks like i'll be sticking to my beta then.. haven't had a single drop for 5 weeks with wifi6/AX enabled, and more than half of my devices on the 5ghz band

What version your beta firmware on

they need to release that one

  • I'm still on version .80 and it's been good for me although I had to disable a chunk of features just to make it stable. I'm not sure about trusting .88 just yet as it might make things worse. They did just release a v2 of the Rax40 so .88 might be to finish bricking the v1 rax40 to convince people to upgrade.

I've been using .88 for a week now and the signal doesn't outright drop as much but it's significantly weaker and I reboot it once or twice daily.  Tonight is the first time it's dropped completely.  I've rebooted a few times and the signal is weaker than usual - I can't even connect from where I usually use it from.

  • Hi everyone. If you want your RAX 40 50 80 to work degrade your FW to 1.0.3. 64_1.0.1
This will fix the wifi signal dropp. For me it did 😉

Everyone already knows that... but everyone also knows that it is not a fix. Only a workaround.

For me firmware 1.0.3. 64_1.0.1 was about the same.  I lose Internet with it still.  It's just now my computer tells me there's no Internet, rather than showing the "Connected" symbol (Windows 10 version 2004).

yes the lan ports will also drop like the wifi no matter what you do

        get rid of it

  • I've given up on this device and got a TP-Link Archer 50, which is actually using the same chipset but so far really stable. I've also manage to get my credit card's extended warranty benefit to reimburse me for this defective device, and would suggest everyone having problems to do the same. It's just not worth your time and energy. I will not allow anyone I know buy a Netgear product ever again.

Good move I got ASUS router not one drop with that and works perfectly

  • Having just bought a RAX40, I so wish I'd seen this board beforehand! After a couple of days, and reading of such little success you;d all been having, I gave upgrading to the latest version a shot. V1.0.3.88_1.0.1

So far so good. No drop out of connectivity and no more rebooting every few hours.

Fingers and toes crossed it stays this way – and auto-updates to firmware are now disabled.

    Hope this helps.

You are within the 1 year warranty and can get them to replace the product, couldn't you?
  • Has anyone tried or heard any noise around the v2 RAX40 model?

I notice from comparing the two user guides, the only difference appears to be an upgraded CPU from dual to triple core.

So wondering if this might be the root cause of all issues on the v1 model?  That being they tried to use an underpowered CPU to deliver all the features and functionality & it cant cope, this might also explain why on firmwware version .88 they have removed support for ODMA etc...

All looks very much like bad design from the start, which they are now having to remove features from the firmware so the underpowered CPU can cope.

If this is the case, the v1 product should be a recall and everyone should at least have the option to swap for a new v2 model (if its actually any better).

Do you really trust Netgear after all this? Selling you a defective product, go radio silent until you purchase a Premium Support plan? Did you see the stunt they try to pull on the other guy where they promised a new firmware, but just gave him the same Beta one over and over?

This company is shady as heck and there is no way I'd let anyone buy anything from them again. Friends don't let friends buy Netgear.

Cant say I trust them at all nope.... but would rather they replaced everyone's defective routers with an improved model, than us all having to purchase something else out of our own pockets.

Mines 18months old, so outside the hardware warranty anyway, so my only choice is to buy something from another brand and NEVER buy Netgear again.
