Netgear R7000 with EX7000, extend the same wifi as acces point?
Hello,
Today i've bought a EX7000 to go with my R7000 wich I've had for about a year now.
The reason for buying it, was to extend the Wifi network, so improve the area where the R7000's signal was getting very weak. (up to signal loss.)
Now my idea was to use the EX7000 as a Acces point, since I've got a LAN cable up to the point where I want to place it. (replacing a LAN switch)
But I would actually like to run it on the same SSID/Password as my router (both 2.4 and 5ghz networks) so it would be, or at least appear to be a seamless transition for one to another.
Is this possible/doable? Or am I stuck with using a different SSID on the extender?
Also, On my router I can enable/Disable a guest network. Can I setup the same on the EX7000?
Regards,
Tim
I believe you should be able to use the same SSID as the main network. Just be sure to use a different channel.
AFAIK, the EX7000 cannot simultaneously support a guest network in addition to the main network. It would have no way of segregating the traffic while backhauling it to the router.
You could probably use a second extender just for the guest network.

Thanks for the reply. I'll give that a whirl when I get back home. I've got it setup with a different SSID now, wich means I've got 4 different wifi networks airing at the moment. (5 if I enable the guest network.) I'd definately like to reduce that number again. (maybe its a good idea to stop the network from broadcasting aswell.)
- If you mean to make the SSID hidden, then there's really no value. It's better to keep it visible.

Works like a charm now. Set the router to channel 2, the acces point to channel 7 (and a 3rd asus acces point to channel 12 )
All set to the same SSID and password. I've had a walk around, and it never appeared to even switch network, so I suppose its working then.
THe guest network isnt an issue, since its only really used in the livingroom anyway. But it was just something I was wondering about.
Thanks for the help!
- rolldogAspirantIs this still working for you? Also, are you having IP addresses assigned from your primary router or are you using static IPs? If static IPs, are they set outside of the DHCP IP range set on your primary router?
