RS700 IPv4 Lease Not Renewing (still not fixed).

I have a Nighthawk RS700 currently running firmware 1.0.9.16. There is a problem with renewing the IPv4 lease. If I restart the router it picks up an Ipv4 address with a 24 hour lease. After 12 hours it should release and then renew that lease for another 12 hours. However, instead of doing this, it retains this lease for the full 24 hours, at which time it does, then release and renew the lease and this is where the problem happens.

When it renews the lease, it shows the Lease Obtained as 1 Days, 0 Hours 0 Minutes and below that it shows Lease Expires as 49710 Days, 6 hours, 27 Minutes (first picture). Some hours later all IPv4 traffic stops (second picture).

All the lights on the router remain white and the Ipv4 Lease Expires display continues to count down, but most websites can no longer be reached. The only websites that continue to work are those with an IPv6 address, such as Google, Amazon etc. Sometimes it is possible to renew the lease by using the Release and Renew buttons, sometimes you cannot log into the router at all, and the only option is a hard reset.

Exactly the same problem is exhibited with firmware 1.0.9.6, however downgrading to firmware 1.0.7.96 makes problem go away and the router renews the IPv4 lease every 12 hours, as expected. The thing is I really would like to continue being able to upgrade to the latest firmware as we are all waiting for the big one that enables MLO.

Further information.

I have a Nighthawk RS200 running firmware 1.0.5.22 that does not exhibit this problem.

I also have a Nighthawk AX6000 that, also does not have this problem.

My ISP is Community Fibre in London, UK.

I have a fibre to the premises connection.

My ONT is a Adtrans SDX621i connected to the router with a CAT8 cable.

As I bought the router second hand and it had already been registered, I do not qualify for the 90 day free support from Netgear.

Another user describes a similar/same problem here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi LaddieParker ,

I'm sorry for the late response. As you mentioned, an earlier post reported an issue with the similar symptom, and it's also an ISP in UK. I worked with Intoxicating, who posted that issue, and had the issue fixed. I just PM you the trial firmware v1.0.9.101_25.7.19 which fixes the issue, please give it a try to see if that fixes the issue you ran into.

    Thanks.

Does the ISP required any special WAN connect configurations like PPPoE or is the connection all DHCP?

What CAT# LAN cable is in between the ONT and RS router? CAT6A STP is recommended.

Is Protection Engine enabled on the RS router?

Is IPv6 enabled on the RS router?

Have you tried a Non managed LAN switch in between the ONT and RS router? Seen it where some handshaking between a ONT and router can be resolved with a lan switch in the middle.

Thanks for very much your response. My answers in italics

No, no special connection just plain old DHCP and both my RS200 and AX6000 work fine.

      Cat8

Is Protection Engine enabled on the RS router?

      Yes

Is IPv6 enabled on the RS router?

Yes, and it works fine. It continues to work even when IPv4 drops.

Unlikely, to be the problem as this only started with firmware update 1.0.9.6 and can fixed by downgrading to version 1.0.7.96 but, I'll give it a try.

Is the CAT8 UTP or STP? STP is preferred.

Please disable Protection Engine on the RS router.

    Hi LaddieParker ,

Please try the latest firmware release v1.0.9.16 (https://kb.netgear.com/000070321/), it addresses the DHCP issues introduced by FW v1.0.9.6.

    • I am already running firmware version 1.0.9.16 and I am still experiencing the problem, so it would seem that the fix that it includes doesn't fix all of the DHCP issues.

I'd just like to thank all of the people who have tried to help me with this issue over the past few days. I have now worked through all of the suggestions that people made, and I can report that, unfortunately none of them have made a dent in the problem.

The only thing that makes this issue go away is to downgrade to firmware version 1.0.7.96. That being the case I have to assume that the problem was introduced in firmware version 1.0.9.6 and carried over to firmware version 1.0.9.16. I did come up with a workaround for the problem which entailed plugging the router into a timer plug and setting it to turn off the power at 3.00 every morning and then back on a minute later at 3.01, effectively rebooting the router every 24 hours and while this worked, it is far from an ideal solution.

The thing is, as I don't have access to Netgear Support due to the fact that I bought the router second hand, I have no idea if anyone else is experiencing this issue and if it is something that will ever get fixed. In addition, given the fact that this range has been on the market for over two years, and MLO has still not been implemented, I can't help but think that there must be some major obstacle that is causing its delay, and I wouldn't at all surprised if, sometime next year the RS line were quietly dropped and replaced with a new line of routers with MLO fully implemented.

So, the upshot of this is, I think it's time to say goodbye to my RS700 and go back to my previous router. I have therefore loaded the router with the last good, working firmware (1.0.7.96), reset it to factory settings and it will be up for sale on eBay this coming Sunday.

      Thanks again,

      Laddie
