More on CPU specs of the ReadyNAS Pro
Hi all,
Does anyone know what FSB speeds the ReadyNAS Pro motherboard supports.
I have three "servers" that I'm trying to consolidate. I figured that the file server (which is actually the slowest machine) would be replaced by the NAS but I'm actually trying to merge some other services onto the box which much luck so far..
One feature I'm working on porting is my Tivo transcoder. Essentially I have a small system that pulls programs off my Tivo, transcodes them and uploads (via WiFi/ethernet) to my portable media player. It means when I get home my media player syncs with my now-playing list so I can watch TV on the train too and from work. Since I work miles and miles away, I don't have time to watch TV at home so it's the only way I can watch TV..
I have the package working on the NAS, and I'm working on the integration with the front end (like managing black-lists and so on). I'd like to bump the speed of the processor but obivously the newer energy efficient <65W intel chips all seem to be 1333MHz FSB. Is this supported on this NAS? I know the warranty is void with this type of fiddling, but that is a risk I'm happy to take.. I also understand you wouldn't recommend an upgrade like this, but I would really like to know if it were possible..
I'll make all the code (mplayer is the driver behind the transcoding) available to anyone if interested.. but it is important to realise this is a Series 1 Tivo and an Archos 705/605 media player, not a common combination..

- DavidtHulinAspirantI feel like I owe this thread my results:
I have a "new" Pro and upgraded to Q6600 SLACR. Used from eBay. At the same time I upgraded the CPU-cooling to a Dynatron P199 - this cooler fits vertically, the only issue I can imagine is that some condensators on the mobo would in some cases hinder a snug fit - but not in my case. The P199 should be able to handle 130W, so I tried first with a QX6700 - it didn't even start. It handles the 95W of the SLACR @ <50%. It hovers between 48-51C.
Two points:
Firstly, apparently this fan is loud. I don't care. The RNS is in a closet next to a noisy switch.
Secondly, I am now able to transcode 3 1080 videos and stream them at the same time. This is the only performance I measure.

- wow, great thread with lots of great info!
I bought the RNDP600E when it first came out, but then had it replaced just a year or two ago due to a hardware failure, the tech support said something about it being "a later revision". I have the bios upgrade that was previous mentioned:
before 10/03/2008 FLAME6-MB V1.6
after 07/26/2010 FLAME6-MB V2.0
And I had previously upgraded the ram to 4gb as I thought at the time that was the limit.
I really need better video transcoding speeds out of this box, so I want to upgrade the CPU. I'm less concerned about the cost of upgrade and more about maxing it out in one order. I will have to ship from usa to central america, wait long times and pay big taxes and shipping fees, so I want to be sure I get everything I need in one go. There won't be room for "returning" anything.
All that being said, I get a little confused to the terminology used throughout this thread. Some people mention Readynas 6 while others speak of Pro 6. The differences in the terms used has left me a little lost on what has been confirmed working for RNDP600E "later revision".
So far, I understand that E7600 3.06ghz works with default fans/heatsink?
But the Q6700 is the better choice for transcoding, but needs alternate cooling solutions and a firmware hack to fix the error messages?
I am understanding cooling solutions are hard to find due to lack of space around CPU and between CPU and case? Is there a determined dimension that always works?
Would something like this be viable?

I like Gelid fans, they are super quiet, dust-proof, and have an interesting patented nanoflux bearing, so I was also thinking about getting these two:

Also wondering if my system can handle 8gb ram as was hinted at in this thread.
Any pro out there can help me conclude? - chirpaLuminaryYes, you can upgrade it to 8GB RAM.

sweet, thanks for the info chirpa! do i need to stick with the slower 800mhz ddr2 or can i go with 1066 DDR2 - i read something about a problem with cooling when faster ram is installed.- SquazzAspirantI'm SO SORRY if I catually post a question that have already been answered in this topic. But I searched the topic, and have read most of the pages, and I really couldn't find anything concrete about my system (ReadyNas Pro 4; Model RNDU4000). I don't know if this is the first or the second gen ReadyNas Pro, but I'm pretty sure it's running an intel Atom processor, and that it's having 1Gb SO-DIMM DDR2 RAM.
Is there a way to find out exactly what hardware my NAS is using?
Furthermore, I was wondering if I would be so lucky that I would be able to run a E6700 or a Q6600 in my NAS? Anyone knowing something here? :) - dsm1212ApprenticeI'm not sure what the upgrade options are for an Atom processor, but it won't be the E6700 or Q6600. It would be an updated Atom processor if any. Might want to start a separate topic since you are right that all the discussion here for processor upgrades was about the Pro 6. If you have SSH access there are utilities you can install to print out some info about the system, but there is also a nice NASMON addon you might want to look at which shows a fair amount of info. I think that requires the PHP addon.

I might create a new topic then, thanks for your input :)
Edit: Thread for Pro 4 can be found here: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=71148 - chirpaLuminaryPro/Ultra 2/4 cannot have their CPU upgraded, it is soldered to the board.
- renedisAspirantTried 2 different CPU's that I had in stock.
E6550 http://ark.intel.com/products/30783
and
E8400 http://ark.intel.com/nl/products/33910/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-E8400-6M-Cache-3_00-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB
Both did not work. Probably because of the 1333MHz FSB.
I have:
07/26/2010 FLAME6-MB V2.0 bios
FLAME6 V1.1 board
(Yellow) Sticker near processor: FA5
Now I'm waiting for my Q6600 to arrive, hope that it works on my board..
