RN202 ReadyNAS 6.10.10: can't install apps?

Hi, I recently updated my RN202 ReadyNAS from 6.10.8 to 6.10.10 and now, when I try to install an app, it says "App installation is no longer supported with App Upload or Available Apps."

What the ****?

And if it can't be fixed, is there a way to downgrade back to 6.10.8?

Thanks,

Greg

You can downgrade to 6.10.9 (or 6.10.8) by manually downloading the arm zip

    I suggest 6.10.9.

Extract the image file from the zip, and then manually install the image from system->settings->update in the web ui.  The install control will be on the left side of the screen.  The NAS will prompt you to reboot when finished.

But installs will likely still fail, due to the deprecation of Debian 8 last year.  There is workaround needed using ssh - see this discussion thread:

Post 1 and 37 are particularly relevant.

Note if you are ok with installing using ssh, you can stay on 6.10.10, and just apply the apt changes in the thread above.

      Thanks StephenB, that's helpful.

I think the only app I need - from the "Available Apps" - is PHPMyAdmin.

Is that still supported in 6.10.9?

The apps (no matter how installed) often need Debian libraries that are downloaded from the internet when the app is installed..  So you will need to make the apt configuration changes from the post I linked.

Note those changes are needed because the Debian community archived the libraries - so it doesn't matter what version of OS 6 you are running.

  • success for me with downgrading to 6.10.9 from the link  on a rn516 . able to install app. no issue for now

    thanks

  • I had a similar Problem with Resilio Sync however I was able to install it successfully by using System, Settings, Install Firmware. an error message came up but after leaving it for ten mins I had a message to say it was installed. Amazingly enough it works.

I'm a little confused and am hoping someone can help me out. I have an RN 3138 and have been using the iDrive App and the Resilio Sync apps for a long time. My system updated to 6.10.10 and I can no longer keep either of those two applications up to date. Both need to be updated for security and other reasons. Is the only way to keep them up to date, now, to downgrade my RN firmware to 6.10.9? Am I understanding that correctly? Does that mean I will never be able to get firmware updates for the RN again? Wouldn't that also create security issues with the RN? Is there no way to keep both the apps installed on the RN and the RN itself on the latest firmware/software for security reasons?

I'm absolutely not super immersed in this. It is a home setup with a complicated network and I can manage it; but I'm just really super frustrated that I can't even update existing installed apps on the RN. Any tips welcome.

Lastly - If I downgrade to 6.10.9 is there any trick to updating the iDrive and the Resilio Sync apps that I didn't have to deal with prior? or is it straightforward. Thank you.

Hello yes no more update on readynas if i have well understood the best and latest version is 6.10.9 for keeping most of the functionalities but no more security update on the nas and you have to remove auto firmware update
To update apps you have now to go on app supplier website to have the latest version download if available and install it with manual package installation
  • Is there no plan to migrate the community apps to a supported version or is that feature being abandoned completely now ?

I've just got the "app installation no longer supported message" and primarily use plex to serve my media to my tv's in the house which occasionally updates the tv app and forces a required update for the server app, I'm running a RN104 and a RN316

  • It seems NG are doing everything possible to get you to upgrade the hardware, when it was working fine. Very disappointed that a huge company like Netgear can't maintain access to at least some of the apps. This coupled with my nas now constantly locking me out for 5 minutes after upgrading beyond 6.10.0. with no way of disabling it. Netgear are NOT Listening to there customers. Well I will be voting with my feet as the saying goes. Do not trust your valuable Data and hard earned cash with these muppets. Now buying a synology.

Netgear clearly has exited the NAS business.  They stopped introducing new models 8 years ago and no longer sell any NAS platforms. All ReadyNAS models are end of life, so there is no Netgear support available.

So they aren't looking to upsell you.  If you want a new NAS, you'll need to go with another vendor (and of course Synology is one of the obvious choices).

That said, my various ReadyNAS are all running with no issues, and I am planning to keep using them for the indefinite future.
