214 nothing but problems trying to setup and install Plex

I seriously am not this "computer stupid" so either this unit is the demon spawn from hell, or this is a horrible product! Perhaps this information below will help someone else, possibly help me diagnose the problem(s) or at a minimum let me vent my frustrations prior to throwing the box out the second story window!

The box claims it had v6.4.1 but was a version 5.4.x when it powered up

Will not power off by the power button EVER

Required a call to tech support to get 4 firmware updates installed

Has a bad LCD display with semi-random letters where the IP address should be

When you try to install Plex it claims the App list might be out of date so it asks you to update

When you update the list, and press install on Plex it again says the list might be out of date because it's got version 0.9.12.8.1362-4601e39 or 0.9.12.19.1537-f38ac80

If you tell it don't update the list just install Plex it claims "Plex Media server" is installed but when you go to http://192.168.1.204:32400/web you get a site unreachable error.

(I have the NAS plugged into the same hub as my computers)

If you download Plex from https://www.plex.tv/downloads/ and try to use the "upload" you get an error message that it didn't install, however it shows up in the installed apps that it installed 1.1.4.2757-24ffd60

The server does have a plexmediaserver directory if you go to http://192.168.1.204/admin/browse.html#path=%2Fdata%2F.apps

but of course there aren't any logs that I can find, just two config.xml files

One in http://192.168.1.204/admin/browse.html#path=%2Fdata%2F.apps%2Fplexmediaserver-annapurna :

If I telnet to 192.168.1.204 3200 I get a Connect failed...

Pings work fine though!

  • Well, no luck on a replacement 214, but since it was bad hardware Fry's happily took back the 214 and the 3x3TB drives. Sorry to Netgear but due to the bad taste I got from the 214, for only $60 more I walked out with a Western Digital MyCloud PR4100 that had the new Intel processor and 4x2TB Red drives all preinstalled that supposedly can also easily run Plex and transcode.

Something really strange here. The RN214 never shipped with 5.x firmware, that is only for the legacy NV+ v2 and Duo v2. There has never been a ReadyNAS 5.4.x release.

You need to get the plex server directly from https://www.plex.tv/downloads/  Select Netgear as the platform, then "Arm 6.x RN2xx"  You use the upload control on the apps page to install it.

Unfortunately that is exactly where I downloaded the software from most recently however I will happily attempt it again and will let you know.

Again, I appreciate your input in my time of frustration! :-)

I cleared my logs prior to attempting to install again via the "Upload" option, now there is one line item in the logs:

Thu Nov 3 2016 15:05:29 System: Cannot install application plexmediaserver-ros6-binaries-annapurna_1.2.5.2966-3f767e7_armel.deb.

If I go to Apps it states Plex Media Server (for RN2xx) is installed. Version 1.2.5.2966-3f767e7

I switched the switch to ON

but I still get a Website can't be reached when it tries to go to 192.168.1.204:3200/web

Doesn't matter if I'm in Chrome or Edge on my Windows 10 box, nor does it work from Chrome or Safari on my Macbook Pro.

I can sucesfully hit the ReadyNas Admin page from all my devices, even my iPhone and my Android tablet, but no Plex.

I even soft power cycled the device since it again wouldnt' turn off by pressing the power button 3 times.

I'm seriously begenning to think this is another case of Fry's selling you a "new" in box item that actually was defective and previously used.

  • Final note. Your competitors MyCloud4100 is on my network, running Plex with the latest firmware and it took under 30 minutes, Led display works properly and 0 calls to tech support.

You sent in screenshots, not the logs but seeing you've returned the unit I don't think there's anything more that can be done.

Apologies, apparently they didn't get attched last time to the e-mail.  I just e-mailed them to y'all a minute ago (and attached the zip for real this time) in hopes it can help y'all build a better product. :-)
