Adding a volume failed

Is this a NV+ (v1 - silver chassis) or a NV+ v2 (charcoal chassis).

The NV+ (v1) does not support 3TB drives. The NV+ v2 does support 3TB drives.

If you have the NV+ (v1) then the drive would recognised a drive with less than 1TB in capacity hence the issue. I would suggest getting another 2TB drive.

Its a light-medium grey so I guess its the v1. From what I remember, the spec said that it supported up to 64T, so I was mislead then...

Is there a way to make my 3T work? I don't want to return it, I bough it from the Internet. Another thing, how come you say that the v1 support HD under 1T and my 2Ts work fine? what is the real limit?!

That figure is taken from an old article: What’s new in RAIDiator 4? years before it was determined that GPT support couldn't be added.

Not in the v1 (runs RAIDiator 4.1.x or earlier).

I said nothing of the sort. I said that the issue that meant the 3TB drives are not supported leads to them being recognised as having under 1TB of capacity. The v1 units don't have GPT support so drives larger than 2TB in capacity are incompatible.

If you bought the drive from an on line retailer, depending which one, they may take it back. I know that Amazon will take back a drive without a restocking fee, but Newegg will charge a 15% restocking fee.

What is the make and model of the drive?

So I went and bough another HD -x( (bullet in my head) this time a 2T. So I plugged it in and it says in status > log:

Wed Jun 27 18:03:36 EDT 2012 The disk attached to channel 2 could not be initialized. The most common reasons are RAID resync in progress, faulty drives, and disks that are too small to be added to the array.

in volumes > settings it says Status : redundant , so I guess there is no resync in progress.

So what is the problem now --x( (Two bullets in my head)

p.s. the HD is a western digital and not a seagate and I hope no one will tell me that's the problem because I will be the unluckiest guy in the world...

The brand shouldn't be a problem but the model might. What's the exact part number on it?

The WD20EARX is on the HCL for the NV+ (v1) so should do fine. If you will press momentarily the power button to illuminate the LED panel, the second line should say "C: 2.2/3.7T free" if on the other hand it says "C: .3/1.8T free" there is still a problem.

From your initial post you said that you have drives in bays 3 and 4 and in your latest post you have added a third drive. Assuming all the drives are 2TB, you should have a volume of approximately 3724 GB showing in the volume settings (open RAIDiator then click on Volumes and then Volume Settings) page. It should show the three drives with a green dot icon in front of the channel number, then the drive mfg and model, the size available in GB and then the amount allocated in GB. At the top, it should say, xxxxGB (xx%) of 3724GB used. If you started with 80% of the volume used you should now be at around 40%.

You should definitely have noticed the resync as it would have taken somewhere between 6 and 8 hours to complete. If your volume was redundant before you started, and it should have been with two drives, then the mere fact that your volume is still redundant would not have changed. If your available volume is still around 1862GB and about 80% used, no resync has taken place. If your total volume with 3x2TB drives is not around 3.7TB, please post back. If it is, then everything is fine.

I will check tonight your trick of holding the power button but I can tell right away that in volumes > status (or something like that) it says only 2 volumes xx of 1.8T for 80% and not 3.7T. and there is only 2 green lights and not even a 3rd grey light flashing or not. As soon as I inserted the 3rd volume in bay 2 there was two log added, one saying "add event" and one right after saying the message I wrote in my first post (no init possible or something like that). In status it says 2 volumes X-Raid and there's no mention anywhere on this page that I added a third volume (disabled , damage or whatever). Just to be clear, there was no resync when I added the third volume.

OK, don't hold the power button down as that will force the NAS to shut down. Momentarily press the power button and then release it.

It sounds as if the system did not like your drive, most likely because it was "too small". This happens sometimes, even with drives of the same make and model. Case in point, I have 8 Seagate ST31000528AS 1TB drives that were originally in two NVX units. Roughly a year ago, I replaced two of the 1TB drives in each unit last summer with 3TB drives. Several months ago, I had one of the remaining 1TB drives fail and it took me three tries to find one of the spare drives that the unit would accept. Even if the drive you are attempting to add is only one sector smaller than the previous smallest drive for the drive to be rejected.

The best solution is to back up your data (or if you have a backup, make sure it is updated so you have a current and complete backup) and then perform a factory default with all three drives present. Once it is fully synchronized and stable, restore your data from the backup. Raid behaves this way because it synchronizes the drives sector by sector (even if the sectors have no data) and if the new drive does not have enough sectors, it cannot perform the synchronization.
