APC Power-Saving Back-UPS Pro 550 (BR550GI)
Hello, I have the following UPS:
APC Power-Saving Back-UPS Pro 550 (BR550GI)
I have connected it to the following Netgear:
Netgear ReadyNAS Pro 2 RNDP2000 2 Bay
I have connected the RJ45 to USB cable from the UPS to the USB on the back of the ReadyNAS. The ReadyNAS is plugged into the master battery socket on the UPS and is the only device connected to the UPS.
If I turn the power off, the battery kicks in and power remains - ie. the ReadyNAS stays on.
HOWEVER - the ReadyNAS is not detecting the UPS at all - it shows up in front view on the Health Page as follows:
UPS 1 Not present NA
Almost as if the device isn't plugged in. RAIDar also does not detected the UPS.
Any Advice Please?????
Thanks

- galorecomputersAspirantAny one that can help here please?
- QuackingPlumsAspirantSilly question, but the RJ45 end of your cable is plugged into the Data port of the UPS, right? Not one of the network ports?
I have the NV+ rather than the Pro2 but I don’t remember having to do anything special for either my current UPS (550GI, same as you) or its predecessor (500i) in order to get the ReadyNAS to recognise it.
There’s an option to configure the ReadyNAS to monitor a UPS across the network using NUT instead, though I doubt that’s the default option. I can't remember if having that set would prevent the ReadyNAS from recognising a directly-connected UPS. Worth checking just in case... - galorecomputersAspirantHello - yeah it's plugged into the top right RJ45 port which says "data port" above it, the cable then connects to a USB port on the rear of the ReadyNAS.
The monitoring over ethernet option is unticked, and the software actually says: "This device is not physically monitoring a UPS. You may choose to monitor a UPS connected to a remote ReadyNAS. On receiving a low battery event, this ReadyNAS will shutdown gracefully." despite it being connected!
Any ideas? - Thanks - PapaBear1ApprenticeHave you tried both rear USB ports?
- galorecomputersAspirantyeh same on both ports :(
- QuackingPlumsAspirantI guess you could install the powerchute software on a PC and check that it recognises the UPS – this should tell you if the problem lies in the UPS (or the supplied cable) or if the ReadyNAS has faulty USB ports.
I remember when I first bought my UPS that I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to setup and configure ReadyNAS not only to shutdown upon notification of an ‘on battery’ event, but also to relay that signal via the on-board NUT service to other devices on my network. I would suggest that you have a problem somewhere in the chain if it’s not equally simple for you. - galorecomputersAspirantI connected the UPS direct to a computer - it didn't detect new hardware. I tried a laptop and had the same thing - Windows should be detecting this as new hardware and seeking drivers.
I will source a new data cable and see if this rectifies the problem - Thanks for all your help :) - PapaBear1ApprenticeIf this was a recently purchased UPS, I would contact APC and see if they won't replace the cable. In your contact, mention that you have tried the cable on the different devices. BTW, if they won't and you want to acquire your own new cable, the end that goes into the UPS is NOT an RJ-45 plug (8 wires) but an RJ-50 (10 wires). Until a recent discussion on this forum I was also under the impression that it was an RJ-45.
Here is the discussion: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=89&t=65926&p=367009#p367009. The post by Claykin explaining the difference is the 11th one. - galorecomputersAspirantHello everyone - PapaBear you are totally right it's a different plug which I realised when I tried to put a different RJ45 cable in as I thought maybe it was loose in the jack or something!
Anyway, I received a StarTech 1.8m UPS Replacement USB Cable (AP9827) this afternoon and I plugged it in and voila!! ReadyNAS now sees the UPS - I didn't even have to restart the ReadyNAS or the UPS! Problem was a faulty cable all along.
Thanks for everyones help which lead me to this solution! :)
