Back-UPS ES550UK: setup with ReadyNAS Duo v2. (Powerchute?)

I've just invested in the above UPS to go with my ReadyNAS Duo, having just learned to my cost that to use a one without a UPS in place is a Bad Idea :x however, am struggling a bit to get it set up properly. I've connected its RJ45 "Data port" to a ReadyNAS USB port, and connected its RJ45 "Wall outlet" port to my router. Looking at the dashboard, the ReadyNAS is seeing the UPS OK (green 'LED' illuminated in dashboard); however under Dashboard -> Settings -> Power, there's a "?" next to "UPS" which when I click on it, reveals that "This device is not physically monitoring a UPS..."

So although the UPS is protecting the NAS, I'm unconvinced that it's going to be telling it to shutdown gracefully when the battery runs flat - which is the only reason I've bought it!

What's wrong here?

I've downloaded from APC an add-on called "PowerChuteNetworkShutdown_3.0.1.bin" which I tried unsuccessfully to install on my Duo ("Architecture is bad"); but anyway I'm no longer sure I even need it?

Am I right in connecting the UPS direct to my network via the router? What is the purpose of that - should I be able to "see" the UPS on my network?

Any advice on this much appreciated!

There should be 3 RJ45 jacks on the UPS. One pair is intended to protect the NAS ethernet line from a power surge. So the wall outlet would go to your router, the other (bottom one) would go to the NAS.

The top RJ45 would be connected to the NAS USB port (with the APC RJ45-USB cable). This is shown in the user manual here: http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/ASTE ... _R0_EN.pdf

If this isn't helpful, try APC support.

Ah, I see, thanks: so evidently my connections are correct, but I wouldn't expect to be able to 'see' the UPS via this cable then. What about the issue of configuring the NAS to shut down gracefully (and/or do I need to get this PowerChute add-on installed?

As far as I can see from the APC website, they only have powerchute for the x86 ReadyNAS.

I use a cyberpower UPS myself, but based on other posters the UPS should be visible to the NV+ NAS over the USB port. Though I haven't seen much on the v2.

    Maybe try APC support?

Also, if other posters are using this UPS with the v2, maybe they can chime in.

Aarghh - of course, the Duo 2 is an ARM device isn't it - hence the 'bad architecture' message.[/quote]

Anyway I've just tested it out using the apparently forum-approved method (plugging the NAS directly into the mains while leaving its USB cable hooked up to the UPS, and then disconnecting the UPS from the mains): the NAS duly powered itself down after about 30 mins, while the other devices hooked up to the UPS remained working. The shutdown event was recorded in the logs so presumably was appropriately 'graceful'.

I guess in the absence of an add-on there's no way to configure any of this stuff; I just use it 'out of the box'.

    Thanks for the advice
